I dont know where to begin. There are so many photographers out there. Can you guys help me? Your opinions on who is worth checking out and who is not? Thanks.

What I have been doing is to look according to what your budget is, then go from there. I usually like photojournalists and I'm going for if I like their work but not by how popular they are.

I am in the same boat as you are...
So far we have just talked to Verdi and LOVED their work. They are pricey but it may be our splurge item.
One of my favorite links on here is pictures you want to re-create at your wedding:
Start out by going to the NY/Long Island section on The Knot and doing a search for photographers. You can search by price range and by style (either traditional, photojournalism or both). Then, search here for reviews. This really helped me narrow things down as far as who to contact.

don't go by people who say 'i LOVE this photographer--they are the best!). that's their opinion. use those opinions to get ideas of who to check out if you want. use the facts of their packages and look at sample photos to decide if you want to visit the studio.
get an idea of your budget and figure out EXACTLY what you think you want before meeting with them. they all have very different packages, and not all are willing to customize a package if the ones they have don't fit with you.
ask friends and relatives who have gotten married in the last 5 years (that you TRUST) to see their wedding album. get an idea of what you like and don't like and then meet with their photographers.

I would suggest attending as many bridal shows as you can. That way you can see the photographers work and meet with them. Usually there will be a few of them there. I found my photographer at a show at the Hilton. But I saw many from shows at the Watermill, Timber Point and Jericho Terrace.

You have to decide what kind of pictures you want. Do you want really 'posed pictures' or more natural ones, like a photojournalist. I found mine by looking at reviews on this website and visiting different vendors. Don't go crazy. Pick a few that you like and stick with them. You will confuse yourself if you visit too many. I opted for Silverfox because the price was right and I have a regular photographer and a photojournalist. The photographer I picked doesn't do the standard wedding poses (my FH will not pose like that). So I told him what I needed and he assigned a photographer that would not make us pose alot.
