Picking readings for Wedding Mass... they're terrible!

I have that 'A Decision to Love' book... I can't stand these readings. They're all about 'FEAR' of God, wife 'obeying' husband, ... and no Love is patient, love is kind anywhere, which I read at two weddings! Why don't I have that choice in my book as a reading? I love that saying!

Wuzzup? lol

i refused to pick anything with fear or obeying as well. we chose some nice ones that were neutral. can't remember what, but keep looking--they're in there!

I am not having a religious service, but my favorite reading has always been from the book of Ruth... it describes the truest of devotions...

Ruth 1:16-17
'Entreat me not to go, nor to return from following after you. For wither thou goes, I will go and where thou lodgest, I will lodge. Thy people shall be my people and thy God, my God.

The Lord do so unto me and more also if aught but death part thee and me.'

And maybe just a BITE of the famous John 4:7-4:18... because it is lengthy - but the ultimate message is pure... that love and fear DO NOT co-exist:

'There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.

We love, because He first loved us.'

And then.. there is always trusty Corinthians...

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love'

Our Old Testament reading is by Tobit. It was one of the only ones that I liked that didn't have those words in it. Here it is.

Tobit 8:4b-8
A reading from Book of Tobit.

On their wedding night Tobiah arose from his bed and said to his wife, “Sister, get up. Let us pray and beg our Lord to have mercy on us and to grant us deliverance.”
Sarah got up, and they started to pray and beg that deliverance might be theirs. They began with these words: “Blessed are you, O God of our fathers; Praised be your name forever and ever.
Let the heavens and all your creation praise you forever. You made Adam and you gave him his wife Eve to be his help and support; and from theses two the human race descended. You said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; let us make him a partner like himself.”
Now, Lord, you know that I take this wife of mine not because of lust, but for a noble purpose.
Call down your mercy on me and on her, allow us to live together to a happy old age.
They said together, “Amen, amen.

Hey Sarah...I have that book too. Got it at pre-cana. I'm meeting with my priest to go over the ceremony in a few weeks - he's giving me a new book with readings so I'll let you know how it is. He said he knows the 'A Decision to Love' book is bad.

That one's definitely one of the better ones! Thank you! I just printed it out!

Aw... that's nice of him! I REALLY don't like the Decision to Love book at ALL!!! I wish I had another book of reading choices! I even tried searching for key words of 'LOVE' and 'MARRIAGE' under Bible sites on the internet... couldn't really find any great, inspirational O.T. readings.

I felt the same way, but I found some that we are going to use, when I get home I will look them up and post.

there are great readings out there. you are thinking of the reading from St. Paul to the Corinithians... love is patient, love is kind... yada. yada. yada.... a beautiful reading, but a bit overdone in my opionion.

FYI: you DO NOT have to pick from the together for life book if you don't want to. i think the readings in there are readings that specifically mention marriage.... back then 2,000 years ago, it was male-domindated society so you have to take the readings in context.

I would suggest looking through the Bible and picking what you want. the wedding feast at cana or the sermon on the mount make great gospel readings for example. the only stipulation for your readings is that:
1. First reading: anything from the OLD testament
2. Responsorial Psalm: ANYTHING from the book of pslams (there are a lot of psalms that mention love)
3. second reading: anything from the NEW testament
4. Gospel: anything from the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke or John.

If you don't like their suggestions, you can pick your own!!!!!!! don't feel stuck to the guidelines.. we are picking a few that they don't mention.

Yes, in my opinion this was the best Old Testament reading. Our new testament reading is the love is patient (Corinthians) one. Good luck!

I picked the 'love is patient, love is kind' reading and the other was talking about animals in pairs or something.
