Picnic basket
Ask your hall to make up a few picnic baskets of leftover food. We did this and they gave us enough food for ten people. By the time we got to the hotel, we were starving. We got to try all the food we couldn't try at the wedding. We had wanted to donate all the leftover food but they told us they couldn't do it for legal reasons (the laws have changed now, so you can donate the food).

I asked my catering hall about this and they said that they do not donate it to shelters or soup kitchens because they have no control of it once it leaves them and if people became ill they were worried that they would be held responsible(how's that for a run on sentence?). They told us that they could give us leftover food but not anyone else. I want to bring mine home so my son has food while we are on the honeymoon!!!

Can you request food that you want or will they give you a mixture of food. Thanks.

We didn't request anything, so they gave us a bit of everything (except certain seafood and food from the stations - which was made on the spot). As for the hall saying they don't donate, that law was changed by the Clinton administration. My hall said the same thing and we tried a few times. Then we dropped it. Didn't want to push the subject after they said no three times. In all actuality, you paid for it, so you should get to do what you want with it. I know for a fact that 80% of our cake was not eaten. I don't know what happened to it. It all depends on how much effort you want to put into it. There was a posting on this site several months ago about an organization on long isalnd that picks up food. Something about Rock & Roll. I have the name somewhere. We were a little bummed that our hall didn't donate. I think it just ends up being extra work for them to package everything and most places don't want to be bothered.

Ours will give us the uneaten dinners, but not the cocktail hour food because they would then have to store it for several hours and they don't want to do that. I agree that if I am paying for it I should decide where the leftovers go, but they said absolutely not and I didn't want to argue about it.

Picnic basket **GREAT IDEA
I aksed the hotel where I am getting married to do this, and although they have never had this kind of request before, they assurred me it was no problem at all, and I am even having the food sent to my parents suit, his parents suit, my brothers and some other people staying with us, why not, all that food shouldn't get waisted, and it's nice.Welcome New Vendors
