Pit Bulls- Bad Breed or Bad Owners?

Original post by groovypeg

I have a serious fear of Pit Bulls. My Fh's friends have one. One night we went to their house and I did not know that they had a dog. When the dog came running out I freaked out and left the party. My question is this: are Pit Bulls inherently vicious, or does a bad owner cause the viciousness? Are there certain types of Pit Bulls that are better than others?

Bad owners.

I think though that when it comes to statistics and pit attacks being up there it may also be because of the kind of people that are drawn to pits as opposed to other breeds.
Not to offend pit owners because I know some wonderful ones, but I think that since people associate pit bulls with agression, the kind of person that would buy a pit, would be a different kind of person that would buy, say, a labroador. Maybe it's the kind of owner that's also aggressive, so he wants an aggressive, mean dog.

And it's when that sort of person buys the dog BECAUSE he wants that aggression, and then in turn, does the sort of things to draw that aggression out, that the problems happen.

I think that some dogs have more of an aggressive tendency than others. And some really just get a bad rap. I think that ALL dogs can become aggressive given the right circumstances, and I think that pets that are the products of loving and caring owners may never exhibit such tendencies, no matter what the breed.

I've come across, mini pinschers, pomeranians, poodles and yorkies that have been 100 times more agressive then any pit I've been around.
Definately poor pet ownership.

IMO, why risk it... I would never get a pit bull, every time you hear of an attack it's almost always a pit bull, and usually it's a dog that showed no aggressive behavior before. I'm sure the owners are most of the problem, but the pit bulls are more prone to violent behavior.

This is untrue..In any case any dog attack that you have read didn't you notice how they usually have an A**#$%@ owners...? Hence it is the bad owner not bad dog.

Even the last highly publicized dog attack...it was not Pitbulls they were Presa Canarios. And they were raised to hurt others...
Personally i haven't heard of a pitbull attack in a while

My husband is always saying that pit bulls have a bad reputation, when in reality they are very sweet dogs.

However, genetics do play a role with aggression...not meaning to say a particular breed is aggressive, but maybe a particular strain of a breed...(If that makes any sense).

My husband has seen a few Chow and Rottie puppies at 8 weeks of age who are ready to take off his face, and the owners who bread the pups were nice, normal people.

Of course, genetics and environment shape that animals behavior.

Some breeds do have their tendencies, for nicer dispositions ie. golden retrievers. And other breeds tend to be a bit more difficult with strangers, ie. Chows.

I do feel bad that Pits are getting such a bad reputation.

bad owners...raises another question...are kids bad or do they have bad parents???

pit bulls have exceptionally strong jaws which makes their bites seem worse b/c they can hold on longer and stronger. but like rude and bratty kids, who teaches them that it is okay to bite???

While I understand the analogy trying to be applied here .. there is a huge difference between kids and dogs .. kids are exposed to many, many outside factors, as opposed to the family dog.

As for how a dog might learn to think it's okay to bite .. just think how cute people think it is when the dog is a puppy and play-bites .. or stop to think of how many pitbulls end up in situations that create this problem .. no doubt they are strong dogs .. but they do seem to be high on the list as the dog of choice for those who feel they need 'protection' .. so with that in mind .. those owners will make sure to get these dogs aggressive .. and because they are animals .. provocation can be deadly, even something that seems innocent can sadly be misunderstood by the dog.

BAD OWNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Pit bulls. And I have ALWAYS wanted a rotie They are two of the cutest dogs. And If you don't teach a dog bad things it won't know to do them. I have a friend that has 2 and the one is Blind and when you come through the door she comes and sits by your leg. She sleeps in bed with my friend every night. The other one is 90 pounds and thinks shes a poodle and sits in your lap on the couch.

Please don't think these are vicious dogs they just have horrible owners who train them to be bad and since the have that 'scary' name people tend to be scared of them then what the owner teaches them works.

I definitely don't think it is 100% bad owners. I do not know much about Pit Bulls and maybe they just have a bad rap but I do think that certain breeds do have a more inherent nature to be dangerous - or more so to protect.

My family had a dog that was know to be dangerous and boy was this dog and may family is a dog lover....he was loveable around family members but was super protective no matter what we did. We had to get rid of it - after it tore up my leg - I still have the scars and this is some 7 years later. He just snapped. I was playing with him and he snapped. Now my family has a Rottie and I totally think they have bad raps. It is the most loveavle dog ever!!!!! And any Rottie owner I have ever met says the same thing.
