place card etiquette

on place cards, i was informal and used peoples' first names:

John and Jenny Smith
Joe Smith

for unmarried, it would be:
John Smith and Jenny Brown
Joe Schmoe

(or put the woman's name on the 2nd line, if it fits better)

we were formal

Mr. and Mrs. Joesph Smith

or

Mr. Joseph Smith


or

Mr. Joseph Smith
Ms. Jane Doe
