Honesty I have seen it done both ways. Each person and per couple.

yeah i think i have seen it both way also.. thats why i am torn between which way to do it... i started doing it per couple then came to an engaged couple.. which brings up my next question- should i put each name on separate line starting with the person i am close with?

No worries. I understand. I just finished stuffing the envelopes with our invitations and everything. I was not stopping until it was done. It takes a lot of time.

Re: place card help!
Per couple.
In the case of an engaged couple, you would put the person with whom you have the closer relationship, then the other person.

Couple. However if you are arranging seating at the table specifically, each person gets their own at their seat.

Re: place card help!
We did it per couple. For unmarried or engaged couples, we did the names the same way one would do them on an invitation. The name of the woman on the first line and the man underneath, regardless of whom you know best.
Ms. Jane Smith Mr. John Doe
(Married couples where the husband and wife have different last names would be linked by 'and.')
