Haven't yet done mine, but am planning on printing right on the card, although my FMIL's husband does calligraphy and he said he could do them. I'd rather that, but it's up in the air. Staples sells place cards and I hope to get them this week...

Re: Place Card Poll
Printing it right on the card! Avery has templates. For my sister's wedding and her shower, and a millon other parties I bought the litl tent cards fomr staples with an ivory border and printed in a font similar to the invitations in each case, sometimes putting a gold or silver seal on the card. it's really easy, especially if you buy something with a template. you just need to do a practice one-three times to get the broders exactly right..once you get it aligned correctly it takes no time at all!

Well here is the deal:
I say it completely depends on the formality and tone you want to set for your wedding.
We had a formal-day-time wedding with an autumn theme, and we didn't have the budget to have ANY caligraphy paid for; so the artistic members of the bridal party and myself all took a fountain pen and did the calligraphy for the invites...but we opted not to write out the place cards since I had another plan.
I bough print-on place card sheets from Staples (96 for @ $10 ...$5 for a pack of 48...6 per sheet) and printed them on our laser computer..though they work on Inkjet as well. I used dye-cut maple and oak leaves to decorate the cards and add to the whole look of the wedding. Since we printed them on the computer, we used the same font that the invitations were printed in. ( i love little details like that)
It just seemed like a crazy amount more work to write them out...and this way they were guaranteed to look good and match.
Saw a pic here on LIW and I am re-creating what I saw.
Printing the number Large on the card and then printing the names on a vellum overlay to attach. If it is too hard to attach then I'll print on clear labels.

Me too Me too!! I saw the same idea and loved it the minute I saw it! I printed the picture out and I plan to recreate it as well!
I threw my mom a 50th b-day party and used clear labels on regular white place cards...they looked great and you could barley tell it was a label.
