place card question

I am writing out my place cards tonight and was wondering if a friend is bringing a guest and I know the guests name...do they each get a seperate place card? What if they are engaged or boyfriend and girlfriend....seperate place cards????

So did you just do whoever was first alphabetically first? Or whoever you were friends with first?
