we didn't have a lot of room on ours so we also wrote Jane and John Smith.

I wrote first and last names, but mainly because I find being called Mrs. John Smith insulting. I have a first name.

Writing Mr. and Mrs. John Smith on the place cards is the more formal way to go (as per Emily Post).
But if you're going for a more casual or informal approach there is nothing wrong with writing John and Cathy Smith or Cathy and John Smith for that matter.
It's your wedding. You set the tone.
