I am moving to nyc from Maryland, my fiance is also moving from PA. I have looked over craigslist, it is hard to tell what is safe and in an area where there is a college close by. I'm not sure whether to rent or start with a condo. Or we could stay with my mom in the bronx. Any suggestions on places to live? Thanks.

Re: Places to live in nyc?
There are a lot of really great neighborhoods in Brooklyn. I live in Willamsburg, which is about a 5 minute commute to the city. I have to warn you though, almost anywhere you go in Brooklyn is going to be EXPENSIVE!!! Condos in Williamsburg START at about 400K. You can probably find a less expensive condo, but it will be further away from Manhattan. Other Brooklyn things to consider: There is no parking in Park Slope or Bay Ridge. I mean NONE. If you plan on having a car, definitely keep this in mind. There are really nice neighborhoods in south brooklyn, (Mil Basin, Midwood) but they are about 45 minutes to an hour from Manhattan.

What about a condo or an apartment? Is it possible to start off in a condo? Rent is rent, but with a condo, it would be an investment, wouldn't it?
There is a lot of Co-ops where we live. (park slope)...if you can afford to get one, I recommend it 100%. We bought ours 3 years ago and we can actually sell twice as much as we purchase it. Definitely a good investment

i LOVE Bay Ridge, Brooklyn!!! there's nothing bad about it!
I agree, I love Bayridge. There are tons of things to do, lots of great bars and restaraunts. You may also want to think about Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill or Carol Gardens. All are great areas close to public transportation and all have alot to do.

I am working in manhattan. My fiance is working in NJ. He would drive, and I would probably need public transportation...
Where in NJ would he be working? Brooklyn might be a good balance for NJ and Manhattan commute. If you're not driving, then Manhattan would be lovely (but costly).

Brooklyn is a great place for you BUT the traffic getting anywhere from Brooklyn is outrageous! If you can afford to buy in Manhattan I think that's your best bet...your FH can take the train to NJ (i think it's the path). You can find a cozy one bedroom in the Murray Hill area in the low 500's. Also, where are you working in Manhattan? Sometimes your commute in the city is 100X worse than from queens or brooklyn.
