I am moving to nyc from Maryland, my fiance is also moving from PA. I have looked over craigslist, it is hard to tell what is safe and in an area where there is a college close by. I'm not sure whether to rent or start with a condo. Or we could stay with my mom in the bronx. Any suggestions on places to live? Thanks.

Re: Places to live in nyc?
Queens is a good place to live. Astoria, Queens is very popular and close to all and its like a couple of stops away from Manhattan. Also Flushing and Bayside, Queens are good areas, also close to all and colleges

Re: Places to live in nyc?
it depends where u are going to work/go to school. Bayside (where I live) is great, but if u need public transpotation to get u places, its not the best place to live. Forest hills is my second fav spot in queens. Close to all transportation but not as suburban and the parking stinks. It depends if ure going to have a car and where u need to commute to. Astoria is very close to the city, but very busy. Are u lookin in manhattan or queens?

I am working in manhattan. My fiance is working in NJ. He would drive, and I would probably need public transportation...

Re: Places to live in nyc?
I agree with QT, brooklyn is probably ure best bet!! It's in between manhattan and NJ. Bay ridge/bensohurst are nice...just a bit of a ride on the subway..maybe about 45min to an hour to the city...not horrible...weekend commute on the train kinda ***** sometimes. I think it will probably be the best compromise for u guys. If u can afford garage parkin in the city, than u can go for it. Usually parking is anywhere from 400+ a month on top of rent. HTH!

What about a condo or an apartment? Is it possible to start off in a condo? Rent is rent, but with a condo, it would be an investment, wouldn't it?

Re: Places to live in nyc?
i know when we were looking into co-ops there weren't a lot on brooklyn. Buying one in manhattan would be an amazing investment but super pricey. I think buying is always better than renting, and u will always make money on ure investment. It depends what u can afford!

I would look into Long Island City. It's an up and coming area with lots of new developments. There are new buildings along the water with AMAZING views of the city. The subway station is one block away and the next stop from there is Penn Station.

Re: Places to live in nyc?
If you are going to look in Bklyn then look into Bklyn Heights and Caroll Gardens, they are both super close to the city which will cut down considerably on commuting time, which you will value. Also, look into Battery Park City in Manhattan, especially if oyu are looking to buy. It is a little more isolated thano ther parts of Manhattan, but quiet and neighbor-hoody and right on the water, the prices are considerably lower and most of the buildings are new because they have been rebuilt post-9/11. If you want to spend a little more then definitely check out apts in the west village, soho, etc. I wouldn't go too far uptown as that is a pretty long driving commute to NJ.

I recommend Astoria too!! I miss living there!
If your FH works in NJ and since you work in Manhattan, would you consider living in Jersey- like Hoboken or Jersey City? they're both very close commutes...

Forest Hills! Very safe and convenient to get to manhattan and around the city. If you can, its best to always own instead of rent. our co-op has already increased in value and we haven't even been living here that long. it'll make a great downpayment for a house eventually.

Re: Places to live in nyc?
Like someone else said, would you consider Hoboken NJ? I lived there for three years and my fiance and i loved it. It is literally a 10 minute subway ride into NYC (less than many areas of brooklyn/queens) and your fiance wouldn't have to deal with driving through the tunnels to get out of NYC into NJ for work (IMO the tolls and hassle of driivng through the tunnels is going to be rough for him). Hoboken is a really cute little city with tons of bars and restaurants. For the most part I HATE NJ (no offense to anyone who lives there) but i highly recommend hoboken. Good luck!
