So my parents are coming out of country for my wedding in June. I want to take them around. But, I'm not from NY so I really don't know a lot of places besides the same old classics about NYC.
Can you guys suggest any nice places worth seeing in NY? Day trips are ok. We will be in Forest Hills so about an 1 or so drive is fine. They like nature, waterfront and such.
Thanks for your help!

My future inlaws are from Ohio and I took them to the Fire Island Light House when they came and they loved it.

I was actually just going to suggest FI.
Most waterfront towns have restaurant downtown areas.

Re: Places to take my parents in NY?
I'm like a walking tour guide! lol, are you looking to take them out just in the city, or all over NY?
in the city you should take them to see HighLine park in Chelsea. it's an old El. Train that they turned into a garded.. feels very one-of-a-kind and has great city views.
for dinner (both of these options are pretty expensive, but totally worth it if they may not be back soon) consider The View- it's a bar/resurant on top of the Marriot that (VEEERRRRRYYYY SSSLLLLOOOWWWLLLYY) spins. All the seats are at windows, and you can barely tell your moving but you get 360* views. or The River Cafe. It's in Brooklyn at the foot of the brooklyn bridge... you get the sickest views of the bridge, the whole city skyline, and the statue of liberty. always gives me goosebumps (FH took me here right after he proposed)
Also (i know this sounds cheesy) but consider taking them on 'the Ride' it's an interactive tour bus, where as your driving people who you thought were just random NYers on the Street break out into song/dance/skits. It's like a moving off-broadway show and NYC tour all in one. a bit touristy but so cute, and you learn alot about the city too!
before i write a novel, let me know if you're interested in to-do's in Long Island as well!

Re: Places to take my parents in NY?
Thanks for all the suggestions I can take them anywhere within 1-2 hour drive from Queens. The sad part of this is that they don't speak English, so even though the ride sounded fun they won't be understanding anything they say

ohhh... yeah, if they don't speak english, they'd be like why on earth are all these people on the sidewalks singing and dancing like lunatics?!?!?
if weather permits, you should consider taking them wine tasting. Harbes Family Farms are beautiful, and in addition to the wine, they have fresh fruits/veggies/pies to snack on.
Def think about The View/ The River Cafe.. those are both very 'New York-y' Things to do that most people don't think of!

Re: Places to take my parents in NY?
lol, gardens aren't really my thing, but people rave about the brooklyn botanical gardens..
If you're going to beaches, I always recommend Montauk, but really anything on the southshore of Long Island is lovely... southshore has bigger waves and sandier beaches, north shore is a bit rockier and has no waves, so i guess if the ocean scared them that might be a better option.
you should consider greenport or the orient, they both have these huge sailboats you can go out on (for like $15 a person, or something else redicously reasonable) for the afternoon.
Oh, and if you take the boat out of greenport, you could have dinner at Claudio's!!! It's a great rawbar resturant, you can eat right on the dock and they have live music at night (stll fun even if your parents don't understand the words)
you should google NY hikeing... also not my thing, but my best friend and her bf bought this book '50 best hiking trails in NY' and said many of them are w/in a half hour of the city.... but the HighLine park is a really cool combo of nature/city.

What do they speak? Maybe you can take them to eat in an area where the language is spoken. Ex. Greek- Astoria.

Re: Places to take my parents in NY?
I would definitely consider going to the North Fork of Long Island. Once you get there, it's just 1 winery after another and you can veer off and see the beautiful beaches. The beaches on the sound are so gorgeous they remind my mom of her hometown in Europe. You can grab lunch in Mattituck at Love Lane Kitchen, or A Mano. Definitely hit up Greenport, it's such a lovely port town with little shops. Some good restaurants there are Frisky Oyster and Noah's. If you have the time, take a ferry to Shelter Island and drive around. SO freaking gorgeous. Or just go to the tip of L.I. at Orient Point. So nice to see.

there is so much to do! there are all the city tourist spots obvi, there are also botanical gardens (in the bronx & brooklyn), the bronx zoo is right from the NY Botanical Garden so you could make the day and do both in the bronx and then go to arthur avenue to eat (yummy italian food)

brooklyn botantical gardens is good for something nature. also central park is beautiful this time of year.
if you feel like going for a drive you could go out to montauk or long beach and go to one of the good seafood restaurants out there and walk around the beach.

Take them to see the Statue of Liberty and plan a whole fun day in the city...you can also do a walk through central park and even a carriage ride!
