Plastic utensils

Can I ask a question?- Why do people save them?

I have been to people's houses for various functions and they use plastic utensils- which is ok- but when I go to throw it away after I finish using them, they catch a heart attack. 'NO, WE SAVE THEM, PUT THEM IN THE SINK TO BE WASHED'

Why do people do this?

THROW THEM AWAY- GO TO THE 99 CENTS STORE AND BUY A 100 PACK.

Sorry but that really annoys me.

Re: Plastic utensils

SOME PEOPLE CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT!!!!

For those that do that, it probably isn't a money issue...it's that they don't want the next generation to have to deal with their trash that takes hundreds of years to decompose.......

Re: Plastic utensils

Even if you put them in the recycle bin, it takes energy and money to recycle them. Plus, in many areas they are not recyclable, for example NYC. I'm not sure about your area. It's better to wash and reuse them.

1. Reuse, if that CAN'T be done
2. Recycle

Re: Plastic utensils

I have plastic utensils that we may use for an outdoor bbq if there's a lot of people. I don't have enough 'real' silverware to serve 30 people....I wash and reuse. Not only that, the packaging itself is wasteful if you keep buying them.

Who cares if someone washes and reuses, what's the diff. between that and washing and reusing metal silverware?

Re: Plastic utensils

As I said I see no problem with using them, but I personally would not re use them.

To each his own, I had no idea it was that serious of an issue.

Re: Plastic utensils

It's not a serious issue, sorry if I came across harsh! I just didn't understand why it would seem gross...we wash and reuse metal

Re: Plastic utensils

i just won't use plastic or paper. no paper plates, no paper towels, no paper napkins, no plastic utensil. i went to kmart and bought the cheap stuff for when we have a lot of people over. wash and store. that's what i do. for napkins, i have cloth ones that i wash weekly in the washing machine.

i'm all for saving the environment. i could go on and on about the things i do...

Re: Plastic utensils

Hi, My name is Lazy, and I throw out plastic utensils
No, but seriously, I see the point about the environment and not having enough silverware for everyone at a large party. I just really consider myself lazy in that area. But considering I don't use plastic utensils all that much, that means I'm also not throwing that many away.

Re: Plastic utensils

I think it depends on the quality of the plasticware. My parents will get plastic stuff for parties and if it is heavy duty, Dad washes it. If it is cheap (whatever was available) we will toss it.

FH's dad saved the plastic utensils we got when we flew to Poland on LOT airlines (Polish airline). They were a really cool shape and they were translucent royal blue. I understand why he saved them. They were sturdy and looked nice
