Platinum vs. White Gold

Platinum vs. White Gold

I have a pave platinum e-ring setting. I have only had my ring 6 months and I really don't like the way it is wearing. So, I am considering changing my setting.

FH's Aunt used to own a jewelry business and maintains that my pave diamonds on my band look cloudy because they are set in platinum. She said I should get white gold if I change the setting. I heard that white gold yellows and needs to be re-dipped. Does anyone have any experience with white gold yellowing or know anything about it? Thanks so much!!!

my mom changed her setting from platinum to white gold because her plat. setting broke. she doesn't have to get it dipped and it hasn't yellowed, and she has had it a long time. i have white gold and i have had it for a year and it hasn't yellowed

I have white gold on my e-ring which I got 11 months ago. I'm getting married the end of this month and I have to get my ring dipped beforehand. It looked yellow next to my wedding band, but still looks fairly white when it's alone.

white gold yellows over time and can be re-dipped. My platinum e-ring and wedding band have pave diamonds and I still think they look sparkly especially after being cleaned.(JMO) Very satisfied platinum customer here

My mom has white gold & the ring is over 30 years old & she never had it dipped....It still is beautiful looking...My ring is white gold & so far no problems with it!

My e-ring was my grandmother's, white gold and not yellowing, never been dipped. My wedding band is platinum and already is so scratched/banged, it looks older than the e-ring!

I love my white gold rings, they haven't discolored at all. I never heard of having them re-dipped. They weren't yellow to start with. The only things I've had redone were things that started out as yellow gold and wanted them white.
Very satisfied white gold ring holder here!

The way white gold wears is also according to your body chemistry. That's why some people can have white gold forever and never have it redipped. My husband's band is white gold, and it's starting to look a little yellow.

Personally, I don't think that your pave diamonds look cloudy because they are set in platinum - white gold is the same color. I just don't think pave diamonds are as sparkly as a 'regular' accent diamond in a 'regular' setting, JMO.

I have platinum and I wouldn't change it. I can always get it polished if you want the nicks and dings out of it.

ETS: White gold is yellow gold with nickel or rhodium mixed in to it to make it white, that's why it looks yellowed when it wears and you have it rhodium dipped to make it look white again.

Thanks so much for your opinions! I guess finding a setting I love (regardless of whether it's white gold or platinum) is going to be the ultimate deciding factor when I go looking on Monday!

VickiC, I agree with you - I think my pave diamonds are not as sparkly next to my solitaire because they are not of high quality, unlike regular 'accent' stones. Someone told me once that it's really hard to find pave with good stones in it. I think I am changing from pave to individual side stones - although FH and I really love the way pave looks.

My ring is pavé and platinum and it's stunning. The smaller diamonds don't look cloudy at all, even next to the solitaire.

I am sure your Pave ring looks great! The sad thing is, I have a fake Swarkski crystal enternity band (that I wear sometimes on my right hand) and the faux diamonds in that sparkle more than the real pave ones in my platinum setting!!! FH says I 'did something' to it... I just think the pave he got was poor quality.

I'll give you girls an update on Monday after we try to do an exchange!

Another thing to consider with the pave setting is that since the setting itself does not allow as much light to pass thru the stone, you won't get as much of a sparkle as you would in a different setting.

My setting is platinum with pave set diamonds - I've been wearing it for 15+ months...the side (pave) diamonds are not cloudy. If your stones are cloudy, I'd say it's the stones - not the setting. I have never heard that it was due to the platinum.

White gold will yellow over time and you will need to dip it every so often.

I was wondering the same thing with white gold because my engagement ring is 18K white gold and it has slightly yellowed on the bottom where it gets a lot of wear. So I guess thats common, I didnt know that.
