Having a live Jazz quartet play during my cocktail hour?? I think its great b/c it will be upbeat and fun and get everyone in the mood to party but will it be a waste?? Originally I had wanted strolling violinists or a harp but that is so soft and will defintily get 'talked over' during a ch - imo. Should I go for the live music or have them play a cd of that type of music???
Also from a guests point of view what is your opinion of it??

I think it would be really interesting. - Something i've never seen before. But also, you don't want the guest to be drowned out at the CH. it's when everyone first sees each other and starts catching up before the partying begins.......

Thanks! I really wanted a band for our wedding but FH really wanted a dj. and since I am getting everything else I want for this wedding so I compromised. I know people dont usually dance during ch hour lol I just dont want them to be 'over looked'

So many people do a Jazz trio or quartet cause it is the perfect background music. It is not there to interfere, or for people to observe. It is there to enhance the mood of your party.

personally, i'd go for the cd...ch is a time for mingling and the band would be a nice touch but may not be necessary.

Our friends just had this back in May. It was was really nice. I LOVE live Jazz music-it's so classy. BUT to be honest, after we got our food and our seats and started mingling, it was just background noise and it could've been taken as a CD playing (if you didn't see them standing there)lol---i ONLY say that because i think in terms of $$$$. I can't imagine how expensive it is to ask them to travel and set up just for one hour. If you can afford it then go for it! I think it's a great touch!

It really depdns on the money. I really wanted jazz trio, but I may not do it, because I was recently at a wedding and they had a live piano player and I didn't even notice! Everyone's talking so much. it also depends on the space and how much space you have. if everyone's seated during the CH and there's a lot fo space, then the sound will carry, if it's a tighter spot, you won't hear it, but people will notice it and it will add an element of class for sure, you just have to decide if it's worth it.

Thanks for all your great opinions!! Please keep them coming!!
Marymoon - Its is a very large space... its the smaller ballroom at sc so they have a stage and everything where normally a band or dj would be.

I think if it's a big space with a stage where they'll be prominent then go for it! I think it's SOOO classy. If they're not going to be seen, then yu notice them when you see them and then it's background, but if they're ona s tage ina prominent place, then I think that's great, b/c if you see them you'll pay even more attn to the music and I think it's a great touch.

I think you should get the string quartet. I am only saying this because when your guests arrive at the CH they want to talk. By having live music it maybe to much for them, especially the elderly crowd, they are always complaining about the music being to loud at weddings.

Waste in my opinon. I paid to have the DJ play at the cocktail hour and their was so much talking I don't think anyone really noticed.
If you don't have a budget or something else you want to spend money on then go for it but I say get chair covers or some other extra touch other than extra music at the cocktail hour.

I love the idea of the jazz at the cocktail hour...you need to way out the costs though. Are you having a DJ or a band? I really wanted the live cocktail hour music but the figures I was getting were a bit much BUT then I talked with my band and we worked out a great rate for a keyboard for the ceremony, jazz trio for the cocktail hour and 10 peice band at the reception. Maybe that is also an option for you.

We are doing that too! I have been to weddings where it was done and LOVED it.

If it won't break the bank, definitely go for it! We had a strolling trumpet player who played and sang like Louis Armstrong who was accompanied by a guitarist. Our guests LOVED it! It set the mood for the reception, and was definitely worth it!

FYI, I don;t know who you are thinking of using but I highly recommend checking nsgraham's recent post about her experience with a particular group.
