I think you should get the string quartet. I am only saying this because when your guests arrive at the CH they want to talk. By having live music it maybe to much for them, especially the elderly crowd, they are always complaining about the music being to loud at weddings.
Thanks for the opinions everyone!!
I definitly dont want to go with strings b/c they are just as much $$ and DEFINITLY will be talked over.

Re: PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR HONEST OPIONS REGARDING
Well, remember that the jazz group is playing to be background and set a mood -- they will be doing instrumentals, not vocals I assume, so I do not think overpowering is a real concern....

I agree that maybe it's not 'necessary' but definitely think it's a great touch. Then again a lot of things aren't necessary like viennese hours, menu upgrades, etc. I think it's very classy, elegant and will set a nice tone. I was just at a wedding that had something very similar for the c-tail hour and it was beautiful so great decision. As far as the harp - I have heard that at a c-tail hour too and it's beautiful and the harp is stunning and catches the eye of a lot of people. It's also great background music as people greet each other and mingle. But the physical instrument is eye catching and all we heard were people commenting how beautiful it was. A live singer in my opinion doesn't work for the c-tail hour although I know a lot of people that like it. IMO, too loud, too over powering and the singer and guests are fighting to hear each other and begins to sound like a high school cafeteria when everyone is talking. So long story short - excellent touch with the Jazz band and a great way to start the reception on a good note.

It's definitely a great idea--if you can afford it and if you are going to be kicking yourself afterwards for not getting it---go for it!! It sounds beautiful!
OH, side note, if your cocktail hour is in the room I was in @ Sandcastle last summer, then I would definitely get it--I just remembered the layout and that room is great--everyone would see them!
I have an idea..why not get them to play for your cocktail hr and also the dinner time? This way you could get the band thing that you wanted, it will be noticed and it's a nice change from the DJ while your having dinner. The price may not be that much different.

We had 3 pieces from our band play Jazz during CH (and dinner) and it was beautiful.
They play to be background music - so noise wasn't (and shouldn't be) a factor.
Looking back, if I had the opportunity to do it all over again...I wouldn't change a thing - they were perfect!

I had a piano player at the cocktail hour and it was great. I didn't want too much music, but one person was perfect

That's what I had. It really added that 'something' and they don't play so loud that the guests can't hear.
