PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE!!

I was all set to start seeing DJs when FMIL calls and says she wants a band not a DJ. She feels since we're having our reception at Flowefield that a band is more appropriate. As far as i know bands are super expensive compared to DJs.

So, do you really think it makes a difference? Which do you think is better? I just want everyone to have a good time!!!!!

I'm having my reception at a really nice place, but I'm using a DJ - FH and I don't like bands. And yes, bands are a lot more expensive. Do what you like more and can afford.

I dont think one is necessarily better than the other.
It depends on the mood you want for your reception.
Bands tend to be alot more expensive than a dj, although the dj I booked and the live singer werent too cheap, for me, the music is one of the most important elements of the reception.

I think you should go with what you really want. I dont think it matters what type of place it is or not. We are having a DJ because we think everyone seems to have a better time.
Or if FMIL is willing to pay for a bang, go for a band that also has a DJ that works with them.

I think there are certain people who think that a band signifies a more classy and elegant affair. I totally disagree and think that it's what you prefer! I am using a DJ not because its cheaper and 'more appropriate' for the setting of my wedding but because FH and I want to hear certain music played at our wedding that a band is not going to be able to play. I say that unless she wants to pay for a band, then do what you want. It's your wedding.

I went to the Great Bridal Expo friday night. The bad there that did the showcase was called Best of Both Worlds. They are a DJ. However, the do have live performers that you could book. For example, they can sing your first dance song. Not sure how much they are, but its like there title, best of both worlds.. ha ha.. but at least you start of the new family getting along with the FMIL, not that its her wedding, but i like to please everyone, i'm such a pushover.. hope to be of some help!

I like a GOOD band better but the GOOD bands seem to be $$$$$
Since FMIL finds it appropriate, perhaps she can pay for the difference between what you would have paid for a dj and what the band costs.

They are too expensive thats number one & sometimes the band members you hear at one of the shows are not there the night of your wedding.
We were looking into it but its not worth it to spend all that money .. a really good DJ is just as elegant.

It's your wedding, do what you want. But since you're asking..... ........ Most people like to dance to the songs they know, not a band's rendition. Our best man and his wife didn't even recognize their first dance song. The woman had a beautiful voice, but it just wasn't what you're used to hearing.

It really is just a matter of preference. Bands are usually 6k and up though.

I prefer live music. I just think it adds to the energy of the party...live performers have an interaction that a DJ cannot provide. I don't like adding singers to DJs-to me and it's only my opinion-it's karaoke like.

There are many great bands out there that sound just like the record-some of them don't cost a ton. I know-because I searched long and hard.

It really depends on what you want. Don't let somebody else dicate what you want.

If you want a DJ get one. It's your day!

Go with what YOU and FH want - not your FMIL! If we could afford a band - we would have, but I know my guests and they would prefer a DJ anyways. A band would be nice for the cocktail hour, though!

totally what i was going to say....we didn't want a band in the first place but FILs did and since they were paying, well, I entertained the idea for 5 minutes and gave them quotes...when they saw that the bands START at 5 times what our DJ quote was, they changed their tune (unintended pun)! In the end we got the 'It's your wedding...' speech and a DJ. (And a look of relief as the bands were just far more than FILs had expected)

My mother and FFIL both wanted us to get a band, FH and I prefer DJs. We want to hear the songs that we like performed by the people that originally sing them. We compromised and got live music for the ceremony and CH though.

Obviously it's your call if you want a band of a DJ. We actaully only looked at bands, and are very happy with our choice (Hank Lane Music, which is both NYC and LI based).

We were actaully advised against just looking at bands at bridal showcases...we were told that these bands are generally not compensated (or compensated well) for the showcase and often then charge more then the 'should' to make up for their time.

We looked at a number of bands, and you can DEF get a good band for under $6000. A Lot under $6K. (Of course, you can easily spend $12,000 too...) We did not look at DJ's-- I'm sure DJ's are much less.

Although in the end we did not go with them, we found a few very nice bands in New Jersey who go to NYC/LI without charging travel costs, amd who very reasonable-- look at Jack Goodman Orchestra and Ariel Entertainment.
