My son is 4 months old and extremely constipated. He has been for most of his short life, but now it is so much worse. We have been giving him prune juice 1 to 2 times per day, and it still doesn't help much. He just had a bowel movement that made him scream, and I actually felt it through his diaper. Sorry about tmi, but the first part of the movement was just a tad smaller than a golf ball, and just as hard, no exaggeration. Other than prune juice, what can I give him? Anybody have any experience with this? What did your doctor tell you to do? We even saw the doctor the other day and he just said to continue the prune juice. We just started him on oatmeal cereal, but I don't really think this is the problem, it was really just as bad before this. Please help! Thanks.

Re: Please help, son is VERY constipated.
WE've had this problem with both of my girls. Increase his water intake, and you may need to give him a fleet enema, but you also have to treat it at the other end, gve him oral senekot (it comes in drops). He may be blocked up, so you need to help him clean himself out, there may be some old, ahrd stool in his system that he can't pass and it causes the other stool to e deprived of the prune juice, water, etc. The enemas work quick, within 10-60 min, give the senkot before bed, it will help to clean him out within 12 hrs. Good luck, let us know how it goes!!

I just wanted to say to Matthew! Poor little guy
I thought you had just started cereal and as I was reading your post I thought maybe it was rice, but then I saw you are giving him oatmeal. We had some issues when I started DS on Rice cereal, VERY binding. But when we switched to oatmeal everything was much better.
Try the prune juice, I hope he feels better!

I would try more water. Also, is it possible that you are giving him iron formula and vitamins with iron in them? That can also cause constipation.

Thanks ladies. I feel SO bad for him, he is in such pain when he pushes and he is SO red afterwards, it actually looks like he has hemorrhoids. Poor little guy. I'm going to call the doc again today to stress just how bad the problem is. I asked the last time if we should give him water, the doc said not unless it's really warm out, he doesn't need any. I thought the oatmeal would make it easier for him and so did the doc, but I guess not. I haven't started him on fruit yet, I've been holding off until he gets used to the veggies. And the vitamins I bought him are without iron.... although the oatmeal box says it has iron. I wonder if I can get oatmeal without iron? Thanks again.

Re: Please help, son is VERY constipated.
My younger brother was like that when he was a baby. My mother swears by the oral senokot. His pediatrician recommended it to her.
She always passes the info on to other Moms with constipated babies.

Try formula/Oatmeal w/out the iron. Also my doctor told me to put a tsp. of Karo corn syrup in his formula. It helps soften the stool. (It worked on my son) to your little guy!!
