Since we have officially started looked for a house I need a list of questions that we should ask when we look...we are both so clueless....we walk around these houses in a daze and never know what to look for or ask? Please help!

Re: Please Help......I need questions
You want to ask general questions, if you like the house:
Age of the roof, what layer are they on? Age of: -boiler -cesspool - major appliances Was the electric pig tailed and do they have the paperwork Amount of AMPS Type of heating Sprinkler system- is there one and is there (I think it is called) a backflow installed Age of windows Age of siding and about the maintance of it Hardwood floors That is all that I can think of for now. Make sure you ask about anything that looks strange. There was this little black thing on our house next to the garage door, it looked like a covered outlet but was in a weird position, it was way that the water company can read our meter without having to come in the house. If we wouldn't have asked, we wouldn't have known what it was and might have removed it.

What does this mean?
'Was the electric pig tailed and do they have the paperwork'
I have never heard of this before.
Thanks.

Re: Please Help......I need questions
In addition to asking specific questions about the house don't forget to ask community questions. What elementary school/middle school and where? Train station location, library, community pools/playgrounds, shopping, religious places, etc. Remember not to get so focused on the house alone that you forget to look at the neighbors homes (ideally you want them to be well-maintained, etc). The first house I ever made an offer on, I loved the house so much I neglected to see across the street the homeowners looked like they were running a mechanics shop out of their house. There were beat up cars all over their property that I hadn't even seen! Needless to say, I withdrew my offer after my family pointed this out!

Re: Please Help......I need questions
additionally I suggest that if you find a house you like, make a second trip and try to bring someone else with you. We looked at one house and really liked it, but when we went back with our parents, thinking of potentially living there , we discovered the house was not for us and our parents came up with questions/concerns that we never thought of!
Good Luck!

age of the roof while you would usually be able to tell by smell, ask if the basement has had any leaks. If there is a deck, ask if they have a C/O for it, the same with anyother addition... not having C/O's are one of the many things that will hold up a closing.

don't forget to ask if it's in a flood zone or not!

Re: Please Help......I need questions
Pig Tailing has something to do with updating the electrical from aluminum to copper or something like that- I am not sure, but I know that it was a big thing that they had to find the paperwork for. DH knows more and I can ask him when he gets home
Thanks for your questions girls...They will be helpful.....As far as the school district is concerned I don't think I will have many questions because we are only looking in areas that I know the school dristricts are excellent.....I guess its the teacher in me!
