what to look for when searching for a florist. i haven't the slightest clue about flowers and i really don't want that to be apparent to the florists.

You sound like me because I also have no clue. I have yet to pick a florist. I know I want something different but yet I still love all roses but I don't want to pay mucho bucks for them. Roses die so quickly.

You'll want to probably choose a color scheme first....maybe search for what flowers are in season during your wedding, you can get more for your money. The more exotic a flower, the more rare it is and more expensive....certain flowers command a certain 'feeling' to a wedding....daisies can be more casual and fun where roses and calla lilies are more elegant. I saw a beautiful white rose bouquet with just a few pink stargazer lilies in it. I'm doing a peach color bouquet with some small purplish fowers and maybe some hot pink that my girls will be carrying. My girls are carrying hot pink Gerbera Daisies with some blue delphinium (a bluish-purpleish filler flower) which I think will look great against their periwinkle dresses.

Re: please post
besides figuring out which flowers you like, think about how many bouquets, centerpieces, boutonnieres(sp?), corsages, etc you'll need. Once that's done, go to a few of the florists you like and check prices. Be open to their ideas also. After getting prices I would pick the florist you are comfortable working with and can afford.
Good luck

Pull pictures you liike out of wedidng magazines. That's waht I did and I had no idea about flowers except I knew I wanted something relatively simple. When I met with the florist, I showed her a pic of my dress, the pages I pulled and she showed me a book of her stuff and said, 'just show me what you like'.

Re: please post
I love gerbera daisies! I love lillies too, but I was told they are symbolic of death. (just ignore that if you like lillies)
I like the strong look of oen type of stemmed flowers, instead of a mixed bouquet as well.
I'll check my Knot book tonight & see if they have suggested questions for florists-- they had an exhaustive list for reception halls that really helped me.
(I never would have thought to ask about bathrooms!)

Re: please post
a small hand tied bouquet of Gerbera Daisies is very nice...and they last forever! Because their colors are so vibrant...they make a statement...check out www.gerbera.com for all the colors (and their technical names!)

If you are looking for roses...ask about what grade of roses you will get. Roses are graded from 40-70. The higher the grade...the bigger the head of the rose. So, if you are having 3 dozen roses in your bo-k, you will probably need 50 grade...but if you only have 2 dozen and you still want it to be big, you need 60 grade. Have the florist show you different grades so you can see.
I learned this from Carmine at Flowers by Emil...definately go check him out...he was great!

Re: please post
He's a vendor on this board...he's in Brooklyn...well worth the trip. I live in NJ and his prices by far were the best out of everyone I saw.

I am glad that you love him and are happy with him. When you go Friday, tell him I said hi and I will be calling him next week to place an order for my grandmother for Xmas.

I was clueless too (still am). I relied mainly on his reputation, talent, and ability to work independently. I warned him that I knew nothing about flowers, had very little idea about what I wanted, and could not provide much direction. He was not fazed at all, asked a few questions, showed me some examples, and was able to give me some great ideas. I just felt confident in his attitude, and the work that he showed me.
Are you looking for a specific 'to ask' list?

Re: please post
yep. looking for a specific to ask list. also looking for price quotes and approximations. i mean i know how much flowers can cost when sent for occasions...i can't imagine how much they would cost for a wedding!
