Please suggest some good books

Please suggest some good books

I know we have a story board, but so few people go on it.

I have a GC to Barnes and Noble - please suggest some good books (quality fiction/non-fiction - nothing with Shopaholic or Prada in the title please or from Oprah's list). I'm definitely going to pick up 'Of Love and Other Demons' by Marquez but I'd like to get 2 more.

Thanks!

I haven't but I'm looking to read books that get strong reactions from the people who read them - I might have to check it out.

I just finished My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picult, such a great book. I'm actually going to pick up some of her other books now.

I wish you could read Spanish!! 'Del amor y otros demonios' is so much better in its native tongue! My DH bought me 'Memories of My Melancholy Whores' and it's a nice short read. Although I was upset that he forgot to buy it in Spanish...and since I love him, I recommend 'News of a Kidnapping' it's non-fiction and just unreal.

I only read Spanish writers (I read English for college courses only) so I'm sorry I can't be of more help!

Two books that I really loved and have stayed with me are Geek Love by Katherine Dunn and Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood.
I read a lot but these two stand out. I thought they were both very thought provoking.

You have no idea how much I'd love to read 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' in Spanish, but I can only read Spanish at a basic level.

I heard good things about 'Memories...' but it's not as high on my must read Marquez list as 'Demons' and 'Love in the Time of Cholera'.

Sidney Sheldon novels are always a good read! I could never put one down!

Do you like historical fiction? I am a huge fan of Phillipa Gregory and devour her books.
I also just read the secret diary of marie antoinette and that was really good. I can't remember the author though.
I also just read Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner and enjoyed that. I really liked her other books too.

Yeah, 'Memories' was dissapointing, but it's because his other work is prize winning!!

Ah, 'El amor en los tiempos de colera' is awesome!! But yes, reading in Spanish is hard for me (a native speaker who needs her dictionary at times!) I can imagine how impossible it must be for a beginner. Especially because of his native Colombian dialect. Of course, the whole 'reading in the native language' thing is a 'rule' that was taught by my older sister and I can only do so in Spanish. I am certain the the translators he works with are great since not all his books are translated.

Oneday... Geek Love is one of my favorites!

Melissa, what about some classics? I'm reading Wuthering Heights and it's good, a little slight but a fun read. I'm moving into Jane Austen territory next.

If you're looking for modern (or post-modern really), you could try Chuck Palahniuck (Fight Club or Survivor) or Max Berry (Company or Jennifer Government)

Toni Morrison is always good (if you can ignore Oprah's endorsement), but stick with Sula and The Bluest Eye. Her others are good, but the magical realism tends to distract from her character development.

Short stories are always good too, try Shirley Jackson and Amy Bloom.

Even though it now looks like I'm Monkey's BFF stalker LIW girl or something...I'd like to chime in for Geek Love too.

And, ha, I'm supposed to be reading Emma but she's been relegated to the back burner by Motherless Brooklyn...which is funny, and kind of good, but a little too cliche with the mobster references. Does definitely make me think about Tourettes more though.

But, if you're into non-fiction, I really enjoyed Savage Beauty which was a biography of Edna St Vincent Millay.

I'll take a look on my bookshelf tonight for you! Too bad I'm not in the US, I would send them to you...but then again, I think the whole point of this post was that you had a GC for Borders to burn!

Love Fight Club. And would you believe that I've read both Sula and The Bluest Eye?

Thanks for the suggestions! I must look into Geek Love.
