Please suggest some good books

Original post by JanuaryBride06

I know we have a story board, but so few people go on it.

I have a GC to Barnes and Noble - please suggest some good books (quality fiction/non-fiction - nothing with Shopaholic or Prada in the title please or from Oprah's list). I'm definitely going to pick up 'Of Love and Other Demons' by Marquez but I'd like to get 2 more.

Thanks!

Sidney Sheldon novels are always a good read! I could never put one down!

I LOVE Sidney Sheldon!!!

Don't bother with the Million Little Pieces, not worth it to me.....

In Her Shoes or anything by her is good......

A great book that I read in HS, A Time To Kill......soooo much better than the movie.

Believe it or not, the Godfather was a great read too....

But, if you're into non-fiction, I really enjoyed Savage Beauty which was a biography of Edna St Vincent Millay.

I'll take a look on my bookshelf tonight for you! Too bad I'm not in the US, I would send them to you...but then again, I think the whole point of this post was that you had a GC for Borders to burn!

I'll have to look into Savage Beauty, too!

And that would have been oh so nice of you to send me books but I would have felt guilty borrowing them since I'm awful at returning books/CDs

I just finished The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, and it was really good.

Some books that I really love:

Pride and Prejudice- Jane Austen- my favorite book of all time

The Secret Life of Bees- Sue Monk Kidd- really good book

The Handmaid's Tale- Margaret Atwood- I couldn't put it down

I Know This Much Is True- Wally Lamb- I know he's been on Oprah's book club, but this book was incredible.

Jumpa Lahiri is very good - she won the Pulitizer Prize for her first work - a collection of short stories - The Interpreter of Maladies (1999 or 2000).

Her latest book (2005) is The Namesake - a finalist for the Pulitzer. Really wonderful multi generational look at an Indian-American family and the tensions/struggles between the older generations who want to maintain their cultural heritage and the younger generation who wants very much to assimilate.

Very touching and so so honest.

Am reading In Cold Blood right now. Never got around to reading it in college. Am also reading Evelyne Lever's biography of Marie Antoinette - which is a fascinating subject, but not particularly well written - I'd go for another biographer.

I would reccomend NOT reading anything by Jodi Picoult, unless you like to read the screenplays to Lifetime Movies.

I read Interpreter of Maladies ( mentioned by Takeout cook) & HATED it, but several peopel in my book club liked it.

I reccomend:
Margaret Atwood--The Blind Assasain
Hand Maid's Tale

Jeanette Winterson--Oranges Aren't the Only Fruit
The Passion
Sexing the Cherry ( i'ts not what it sounds like)

My favorite books from college were:
Cal, by Bernard McLaverty &
Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin.
Let me know if you want any more detail on any of these.

LOVED the Notebook and The wedding by Nicholas Sparks. so romantic...but not cheesy. Any book by james patterson. I really like thriller type books or non-fiction. I just inished reading the book Laci Peterson's mother wrote. it was pretty crazy.

how about something off the Oprah book club list? her books are captivating and always have substance!!
FM me for any info on them you may need! i just about read them all!

I'm so far from being a fan of hers but thanks anyway.

No problem, I am not a fan of hers either, but she definitely knows how to pick out a great book, I'll give her that.

Some of the books people mentioned on this post came off of her list!

I'm sure that some are on her list, but she didn't write them or discover them, so we really can't give her any credit. At all.

Are you interested in more non-fiction? DH reads a lot of both, so I could ask him for you, if you are interested.

Read some of Isabel allende if you like Marquez - you will LOVE her...

Kite Runner was good, Secert Life of Bees - eh - sweet, nothing spectatcular....

Do yourself a favor- go get Alice Walker - not just Colr Purple - get a book called '3rd Life of Grange Copeland' - the title sounds but it is sooooo good!!! You will love it!
I have read all her books - LOVE her!

Also, Jamaica Kincaid, and Edwidge Danticat.... Just amazing, amazing writers!

I can't stand oprah she's EVERYWHERE, but she sure knows how to pick a book! Her and her 27 million viewers that run out to buy a book just cause she mentions it makes them hugely successful and popular

on another note.. the devil wears prada and everyone worth knowing.. great quick reads!!!

I only read The Pact, but my God it was awful. But I was so so sucked in. Defintely soap opera-like fluff.
I can't beleive she is so popular.
Actually, well, yes I can.
