Poinsettas poisonous to animals?

Poinsettas poisonous to animals?

My coworkers were just telling me they believe poinsettas are poisonous.

I never heard this before.

Has this happened to anyone?

How can I keep the cat away from it?

Where can I keep it in the house.

Should I hang it from the ceiling, can I?

I think I have heard this (I should know since my DH is a vet)...I'll ask him if he has had any cases like this when he comes home.

I posted a list of hazardous items last week. Pointsettias was on the list. I think they'd have to eat a lot of it though to get sick, but hopefully Kathy will find out the answer.

Here is a list of stuff that are poisionous to cats - Poinsettas are listed as low toxicity. My friend just brought me one yesterday and I'm a little worrie - but we put it on the mantle where she never goes. My old boss had 2 cats and about 7 poinsettas for a few years and never any problem.

I have heard this too, but I will say that my dog at a pointsetta plant when she was a pupppy we were so nervous, but 11 years later she is fine!
Now we just keep them out of reach, but I think thats probably easier with a dog than a cat!!

WOW, that is one huge list of poisonous plants.

OMG it's like you can't own a plant in your house.

Just talked to DH, and he said that the most of what he's seen with poinsetta toxicity is gastrointestinal disturbances, (vomitting, loose stool etc.)
But not death or anything that severe.

I can't have any plants in my house .. simply because our kitty will eat any and all of them .. so .. why bother if they're going to end up getting destroyed??

And believe me .. he's quick .. it's just totally not worth the worry .. hassle .. or aggrivation.

I've heard this also and since I have a cat who LOVES to eat plants I make sure it's up somewhere high where she usually never ventures. Just don't want to chance it,,,

It has to be from the damn Poinsetta that he is sick! That is exactly what he is feeling right now. Vomiting with loose stool almost diarhea like.

I can't believe he even licked it off the floor because it is too high for him to reach.

How long do you think it will take to pass? Or wont it without some sort of medication?

Thanks

Oh - my aunt's dog ate her eucalyputs plant last year and got sick too. A first they thought it was Parvo, but it turned out he ate the plate. Becareful...it's not just Poinsettas!

I just FM'd that...Be absolutely positive that there's nothing else going on with your animal.
