Point Reduction Class

Point Reduction Class

Ugh...so my mom just went to try and argue a speeding ticket I got like 2 years ago in Suffolk...they didn't care what she had to say and now I've got 6 freakin points on my license!!!

Have any of you ever taken a point reduction class? How many points did it take off? Was it boring as crap? Did it cost money? Is it a couple of days or just one day? Any info you have I'd really appreciate it!

This is so freakin annoying

Re: Point Reduction Class

We did it to get our insurance reduced. It is boring as hell but it saved us about 10%. AAA does it, if you go through their website. I think it was 35 bucks for non members.

I would recommend going with someone because we passed notes to each other throughout the entire course. We were like little children.

I took it a few years ago I think it took off 4 points (I could be wrong its been awhile) but the course is the same as defensive driving. And you can now take that online.

There usually is a charge and it's a 6 hour class. You can find them at local libraries, community centers, etc. Fortunately for you, NYS now allows you to do an online version. I haven't done it yet, but check out the link...

NYS DMV Defensive Driving Class

And yes, it is painfully boring most of the time.

is a defensive driving class the same thing? i did that and the class was only like 3 hours long. my boss's work had someone come do a class at her office and we took it together. it was $50 and is good for two years and it pays for itself pretty quickly.

this is what i took. it was pretty boring, but was worth it because it reduced my insurance and took off points if i am not mistaken!

I know FH did this but it was a few years ago so I don't remember the details, I can ask him when he gets home from work and get back to you. But I know it cleared all his points (i'm pretty sure all of them, but can be wrong) and I think it also lowered his insurance. Like I said I'll find out for sure though when he gets home tonight!

hahaha i say this so many times i hear it in my sleep

You can take a course and have up to 4 points taken off your record. Contact your local DMV or you can take it online (which is sooooooooooooooooooooo key)

oh and by the way.... you could have asked me to go argue it for you since that's how I DO lol. your poor mom probably isn't used to appearing in traffic court i bet!

It's up to 4 points or 10% off your insurance rates. It is painfully boring, but with 6 points, I think you need to do it. It's usually one long day, like 5 or 6 hours and there is a fee for it.

it takes off 4 points from your license and also lowers your insurance (I think 10%)....

it is completely boring and useless and you will likely fall asleep....

Re: Point Reduction Class

It actually doesnt get rid of points on your license, they cycle off i think every 18 months. It will remain on your record regardless but the active point period is cycled every 18 months in which you cant accumulate more than 11points or license goes bye bye. BUT it does reduce your insurance and it looks good to your insurance agency that you took the class in case you were going to be dropped or needed a new company. AND before people jump on me that I dont know what Im talking about- I worked at the DMV-(am no longer there). So when you take the class make sure your completion slip is mailed in or that albany has recieved it so it does show on your record.

Forgot to ask how fast were you going??? 6 points in one shot is rough- sorry. Hope the DMV doesnt make you pay those ****** driver assessment fees for it.

Re: Point Reduction Class

The Point & Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP), approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles, is available through private companies or corporations, called 'course sponsors,' throughout New York State. Each qualifying course must meet strict standards for the safe driving information presented and program effectiveness. If you complete an approved PIRP course:

It will help refresh your driving knowledge with a review of time-tested safe driving tips and an overview of today's vehicle and traffic laws.
You may be eligible to reduce as many as four (4) points on your driving record. The DMV computer will automatically note your eligibility to receive the reduction.
If you are the principal operator of a motor vehicle, you will receive a minimum 10% reduction in the base rate of your automobile and motorcycle liability and collision insurance premiums each year for three years.

Take it online! It's easy, very boring but worth it for the insurance discount or point reduction.

Re: Point Reduction Class

definitely worth to do the class. I do it every 2-4 years just for the insurance discount. My auto insurance payment dropped by at least $100 when I told GEICO I took the course!!
