Poker party for FH? Need ideas!

Poker party for FH? Need ideas!

I have awhile until Fh's birthdya in June, but he's really into poker, so I was thinking of buying him a nice poker set and having friends over for a 'poker night.' Except I barely know anything about poker.

Any ideas?

Also, I don't want to play for real money...so should I have prizes or something for the people with the most chips at the end, or prizes you can 'buy' with your chips?

What else do I need? I've only ever seen poker on TV or online, and then there's a professional dealer...Do I need a tabletop cover thing, or what?

I'm totally stupid

That's such a cute idea..My dh is poker obsessed as well.

Well, maybe you can do a tournament..where everyone plays with a certain amount of chips and ultimately there is one winner.

ETA:
The plus with a tournament is that they can last for a long time. The negatives is that when people are out..they are just hanging around..

DH's friends just bought him a really nice poker set for his birthday with professional weight chips. I looked into it and it was pretty expensive, but a very nice gift, he was thrilled with it.

I don't think you need all the felt and nonsense, but it would be really funny if you had visors and cigars for everyone!

If it wouldn't make the furniture stink I'd be all over it! That's too funny. Maybe candy cigars...that would be cute

hey jenn

first of all great idea -- don't know much about poker sets, but let me propose this suggestion

does doug play with a regular group of people?
do they usually play for money?

If so, I would say, you might consider doing the tournament thing, but have everyone chip in like $20 to enter and that's the pot to the winner.

I just think that if he and his group and are used to playing for money and you do the 'prize' thing, it looks a tad cheesy, IMO

But, if it's not a regular group and they aren't used to playing for cash, then the prize thing is fine.

FH doens't have a regular group. He did in HS and college I think.

He hasn't played since college, to this'll be a treat. And you've met Doug. he's not this macho guy, he's pretty silly, so I think the cheesy stuff could work out and be cute.

I don't like the idea of playing for $$, because I don't want people to have to spend $$ to come to the party, and also I don't want to encourage my FH to gamble (he's been known to get carried away), although this might be ok, if it's just a $20 limit.

OK, you can get everything you need at Target and a dollar store.

From experience, get 2 or more decks of cards. Kills downtime for shuffling. (usually they have tons at the dollar store)

You need a simple set of chips, depending on how many players they'll be. Target has this one for $19.99 including a felt table cover thingy (not necessary), cards, chips, and rules (Always helpful.) THey also have just chips for $9.99.

FH plays every week, and I go sometimes too. It's actually fun. I hated it at first, but now it's fun. The girls we play with are turning out better than the guys, 'cause we learn very quickly, are hard to 'read', and we 'read' others VERY easily (ESPECIALLY our SOs!)

Also, Target has a REALLY cut set of dishes/party bowls/glasses with cards on them. Very cheap too - just a couple bucks each piece. I bought a chip bowl and we use it every time.

I can't find a pic of the bowl on Target.com, but here's some cute glasses!

yeah, just put a limit on it, i understand what you are saying about making people pay but i dunno, something about making it too gimmicky with candy cigars and prizes makes it too 'high schoolish' IMO

but that's just me

Re: Poker party for FH? Need ideas!

we play w/ a $10 buy-in. If we have a lot of time to play, we'll play tournament style (meaning you play til you lose your $10, no more buying back in.) The winner will take all but $10, and the 2nd place will get his $10 back.

If we're tired or pressed for time, we play a cash game. $10 buy-in, and you can cash out at any time, or if you lose your $10, you can 'buy back in' without any problems.

Hey, it's cheaper than a movie, lasts a lot longer, and it's FUN!

(Last time, one of the girls had a bottle of jaegermeister in her freezer - that made things interesting!!!)_

they will probably want to play for money if they are into poker, leave that up to him to set the limits and you can just do the decorating

Re: Poker party for FH? Need ideas!

I see what you're saying Don.

I'm not sure because I think most of our firends don't play poker often, or at all..so it won't be a serious poker player kind of thing. I don't necessarily want to make people buy into something they know they're gonna lose...

Also, we throw silly parties all the time... you should have seen our halloween party...OMG...we had spiderwebs and spooky sounds and blacklites and gothic style candles, fake worms on the table and I made orange cupcakes...LOL

We are HUGE dorks...and so are our friends...

I think MAYBE 2 people at the party would be poker enthusiasts...and everyone else will be like 'eh'..I think they'll feel intimidated by it if it's a serious poker game.

whatever the norm is, then go for it

Re: Poker party for FH? Need ideas!

yeah, if 2 play and others don't, the game may be VERY lopsided...
Prizes could be very cute - sounds like somethig I would do, but our friends would laugh at me.

Re: Poker party for FH? Need ideas!

I went to Stuyvesant so our friends are a BIG bunch of nerds...lol...

I don't think I could make it a serious poker game..maybe I can make prizes for the WORST players..lol. Like if you're the first player to lose then you get a prize...lol..

I'm going to ask FH's friends who actually play poker...

I really don't let FH play poker for money (well not that i cna not let him do anything, but I discourage it) because he's really dumb and plays with peopke who always beat him, and then doubles up to try to win $$ back. He owed about $400 in HIGH SCHOOL from poker games.

I think the prize thing could work...you can get good prizes like a few lotto tickets, maybe a small bottle of vodka/rum, etc.. to give away..
