On Z100 the other morning they had a big discussion about if it is ok for the guy to take the girl's last name. (someone called in and said that a friend of theirs was unable to take his wife's last name whereever they lived). I brought it up to FH the other day as a joke and he said he would never take my last name!
What are you doing about your name change? I am most likely going to take his last name...but that will be the end of my last name in my family then...bc my only girl cousin has a different last name. Just wondering what everyone else is doing!

Re: POLL about name change
I am taking FH last name but I do not have a middle name so I am keeping my last name as my middle name.

None of the above--I added DH's last name to mine w/o a hyphen! Best of both worlds to me---so I can use both or either...it can be a pain explaining at times but I am soo happy with my decision.
So this is true? If you add it without a hyphen, you can still keep some things as just maiden name, some as just married name, and some as both, for whatever reasons?
Interesting! I'd like to know more about this.
Legally, I highly doubt it (though I'm not 100% sure). If you add it to your name without hyphenating it, it's still a legal part of your name... and thus couldn't be omitted from important legal documents (driver's license, etc.) You definitely don't want any confusion over stuff like that.
Socially, of course, you can use it however you want to.

Re: POLL about name change
PS - I am taking my FH's last name, and I can't wait!
I do feel sad to lose my last name... but I want to take him... Even though I'm changing from a very easy two-syllable last name to a FIVE syllable Italian last name that everyone in his family pronounces differently. I love it. I especially love it b/c I'm 100% Irish and FH has red hair! (He's only 1/4 Italian, but the red hair comes from the Italian side) We do not match the last name at all.

Re: POLL about name change
i really don't want to change my name, but fh felt a little insulted when i brought it up. i tried to explain it to him that this has been MY name my entire life and i don't want to give it up because it's mine. i wouldn't ask him to change his name - it wouldn't even be considered that he do that, so why is it just a given that i would change mine and an insult if i don't. i dunno, it's a touchy subject and i don't want to hurt him, but i really don't want to change my name either. we got time though, we'll discuss...
at the very least i'll be legally keeping my name and if people choose to call me by his that'd be better than nothing.

I had to make sure important documents had both names on it---but it is all my doing---people tend to pick and choose which name they want to put on something and legally (spoke with a lawyer about this) as long as I am not attempting to fraud or trick anyone,it's fine.

Re: POLL about name change
I didn't take my DH's but now I'm going to change it... After thinking about it, I am very attached to my last name because I felt like I was losing my mom and family in some ways... but my mom brought up a good point that she gave up her name to make our family. In the grand scheme, it's just a name, even though I'll miss my Italian name! *Also, I felt like we weren't 'married' on our honeymoon when I was giving our names for the massage reservations and checking in at the airport with two different names, I don't know why though!
