This comes up all the time on the Boston board on the Knot (where I go a lot since I live in Boston). It's always a heated issue.

That being said, I think it's really important to consider the type of even you're having. If it's an afternoon weddding that's not quite as formal, I think kids would be fine. If you're planning a formal event that is in the evening, it might be a better idea to limit or not invite kids. I personally would never dream of bringing an child to an evening wedding.

My FI and I decided that the only kids at our wedding will be his two cousins who are junior bridesmaids. They are 13 and 9, and their parents are planning on sending them home with a babysitter at around 10.

HTH!

Everyone has a different opinion about this and its seems like Im the minority BUT thats okay. We will be having kids at our wedding. Neices, nephews, cousins, and friends. My FI and I adore children and they give an extra twist to an affair. I want to celebrate with everyone special to me - young and old. I cant wait!

No - kids ruined my brother's wedding, all they did was run around in a circle on the dance floor THE WHOLE TIME.

We didn't have any kid in or at our wedding, and I wouldn't have changed a thing!

Definitely a tough one...the only kids we had were my immediate cousins who are young. It was slightly ackward to explain but it's your wedding so whatever you both decide together, stick with it!!!

i think it depends on how many kids you have in your family or that would have to be invited.....
for us, there were only 3 little ones, and then like 3 or 4 that were around 12 years old, so we didn't worry about it , and just let them all come.....the older ones were completely fine, and the little ones got tired so their parents took them home early anyway...
BUT- my friend is obsessed with kids and babysat alot in high school and college- i think she invited EVERY kid shes ever babysat for.... there were like 30 kids there!!!!! all running around the dancefloor the whole time- getting in the way during their first dance, cake cutting, etc..... it totally ruined the whole wedding.
but i think if its just a matter of 3 or 4 kids that would have to be invited, its better to just invite them than cause family problems with it......

We are not having any kids.... I have heard of weddings being mistaken for kid's birthday parties due to all the kids running around and taking over the dancefloor, LOL... not my thing.

Personally I wish I didn't have to invite kids to my affair. But because all my 4 older siblings and cousins have kids (ages 1-15) and probably dont understand how tough it will be for me to pay for their kids meals - they all got married before so many kids came along - I would have to invite them or they will feel offended.

It's also because we're asians and at chinese banquet halls we pay by the table not by the head. Also at asian banquet halls it's usually 50 bucks per head anyway, not the 100/head at nonAsian banquet halls. You can squeeze an extra baby into a 10 seat table and won't incur an extra charge, but try squeezing a now 6 year old into a 10 seat table!

It's a tough call. :(

I don't understand why having kids at your wedding is such a big deal? I am having a Saturday night black tie wedding and want my neices and nephews there! Unfortunately their mom's (my sisters) see differently, so they will only attend the cocktail hour. I am not starting any drama, I am just wondering why it's such a big deal to some people?.

I had 8 kids at my wedding all under 9 years old, the youngest being my niece who was 21 months old at the time (who stayed up partying until the last song was played). These kids were so well behaved, they danced, ate and had a great time, as a matter of fact, my Mom's boss's twin 7 year old boys didnt want to leave at the end of the night, they were having too much fun. I'm glad I had them, looking at my dvd and watching my niece dance with my best friends daughter was priceless.

JMO but I do not regret my decision at all
