Poll: Cakes

Poll: Cakes

Are you having a fondant cake or buttercream? I am really not a fan of fondant (that hard marzapan icing is not good) but I have never seen a buttercream cake at a wedding before! Can a buttercream cake stay on show the whole night or does it have to be refrigerated? My baker said they can make us a faux cake and have the real one in the back but I don't like this idea and think it can get pricey!

I've been to weddings were the cake was buttercream and it was out for 3 hours or so.. it was absolutely fine.. and they cake was about 4 ft high as well.. so no problems there..

Ours will be buttercream...not a big fan of the fondant either. I never heard that buttercream can't be displayed. Fondant hasnt been around forever....what did people do before fondant?

I love the look of some fondant cakes, I love working with fondant to make cakes because there is so much you can do with it.

But that being said, the cost of fondant and the fact that a lot of people don't like to eat it, I went with buttercream.

i love the look of fondant but definetly not a fan of the taste. it really takes searching hi & low to find a bakery that makes a fondant that actually tastes good! lol. I went with buttercream...a lot of reception halls actually do this now...because it can give the same soft look somewhat similar to fondant, and it no longer has that cheap ultra sweet taste that u'd normally find in grocery storebought cakes. Whipped cream is the one u really have to worry about refrigerating...u usually can't leave it out all night.. one to keep the taste fresh, two to keep the cake from 'sweating', and three for not having the cake collapse! lol. but butter cream is fine...here's a pic of my cake :) it was so elegant & SOOO yummy and stayed out in the reception room from the start of the wedding untill cake time... all buttercream i WISH i could taste it again!

actually what a lot of people do these days is make a faux cake and then have sheet cake in the back....HUGE way to cut costs, but these days most reception halls include the cake in the contract.

I'm having fondant. I do agree with you that most fondant does not taste good. However, this is because most reception halls/bakeries order their fondant already made from wholesalers/factories, etc. Fondant made this way is full of artificials stuff and chemicals so that's why it tastes either chemical-ly or too sweet, etc.
My bakery happens to make their own from scratch and they made some for me when I went to pick out/design my cake with them and it was delicious. They make an organic version so it's not super sweet and doesn't taste like chemicals at all. I was extremely happy with it.

Long story longer, if you like the look of fondant but are worried about the taste, talk to the baker and see how theirs is made. If they make their own, it might not taste as bad as you expect it to.

Re: Poll: Cakes

My hall includes the cake, so we are just going with that. They don't do fondant (we can choose from buttercream or whipped cream) so we plan to go with buttercream. We are doing a full Viennesse so we didn't think it was necessary to pay extra to go to an outside bakery for fondant.

Even if fondant was an option, i'm not sure which I would choose. I like the look sometimes -- it gives a nice smooth finish, but other times I think it looks like plastic or 'fake' -- also, I heard about the taste issues although I'm sure a good bakery can get around that. I'm not a big cake person and don't usually eat the frosting on any cakes so..
