POLL: Future MIL doesn't like my favor idea too much and now I am second-guessing...

Original post by neesiepie

I decided to do wedding-themed fortune cookies for each couple in a little chinese take-out box decorated with ribbon and the poem:

'A proposal in a fortune cookie started it all...
Thanks for sharing in the wedding of Denise and Paul.'
(since FI put the proposal in a fortune cookie)

I mentioned it to FI and he loves the idea, but FMIL thinks that maybe it's a little too cheap and guests would prefer something a little more 'valuable' like some sort of knick-knack or picture frame to take home and use...She wasn't rude about it at all, and did say it is ultimately up to me and FI...but since I asked for her honest opinion....

What do you guys think?

Cheap? Or just fine?

SHe suggested maybe using instead of seating cards AND have favors...just print the table # on the boxes.....

ETS: the fortune cookies themselves are edible and customized with our names and wedding date on one side of the fortune and a romantic fortune on the other side....

I think it is perfect for the two of you...It represent one of the most memorable times of your life...I SAY USE IT!!!

PS- you are not going to be able to please everyone... so do what you and your FI want

your FMIL had her wedding already. This is yours and FH's day so yo can do whatever you desire. If she is not paying for it she does not have a say!!!!

That idea is so cute and it's really nice that you're sharing your story with you guests...

You can't please everyone..please youself and FH.

I think its great an in my opinion I don't think guests really obsess about the favor and how much it cost.

I think your idea is original and personal and you should stick with. She will learn to like it when you don't change your mind.

I love the sentimental value ! Not cheap at all. Better than another dust collector.

I agreee that is should be one per person though

I am not a fan of favors, and I'd be the first to call them cheesy if I thought they were, but your idea is great! Sentimental, personal, different.

I gave Krispy Kreme Donuts as our favors and still people say it was a good idea.
But a favor like that should be one per person.

This is a great opportunity to pass another lesson I learned on to some new brides to be:
Never offer information about your plans to people that you don't think will be 100% supportive! Here is what I did:
Person X = 'What will you do for favors'
Me- 'We are still discussing it'
Person X- 'well I think you should give photo frames because people love that'
Me- 'Oh, thanks for the idea. We'll see'

and then NEVER mention it again.

Also, never ask for an opinion if you don't really want one. During my planning I knew there were things that I wanted to do and I also knew some people wouldn't like the idea so I didn't discuss it. It was my day and my decisions were not up for discussion.

I completely agree with the other girls - your favor idea is adorable!

Besides, I'd rather have a little snack later to remember the wedding then yet ANOTHER chotchke in my house.

michele,

I could not agree more with your advice. In the beginning I was happy to find new ideas and share them with people until I realized that they had no problem stomping on my happiness. Now, I just say I am working on it even when we are done with something. Better to be happy and share it with you all than have someone tell me something I like isn't good enough !!

p.s. - I think the favor idea is fabulous !

I also like the fortune cookie idea. I hate getting little knick-knacks that collect dust. The only favor I've ever used were some little crystal swarovski snowflakes that to on our Christmas tree.

We gave chocolates, after debating on several options. We had so many generations and types of relatives and friends, that we couldn't come up with anything that would be appreciated by everyone.

Also, where I grew up in the midwest, the favors were always some sort of chocolate.

The tie-in to your proposal is especially cute! It also sounds like FMIL's comment might not be her opinion, but what she thinks her relatives will say later. When we were planning DH cautioned about a few things like that, where he didn't care, but knowing his family, he just cautioned that they might say certain things behind our backs.

i think it is such a cute idea!!! i think having a favor that is representative of your life together is great. we are probably doing the cd's b/c we both LOVE music and want to share that. we were told not to, but we want to and so that is that. it is your wedding and i agree with the girls who say don't ask if you don't want an opinion. and i have seen the boxes at oriental trading and i love the idea of the cookie that is silver. good luck but great idea!
