Actually I want to move 600 miles away. Not to get away from my family of course, but to a quieter and less expensive part of the country.

I tried moving 250 miles away, and not seeing my family every week was way too hard. Now JT's family, on the other hand, well, we could live without

It would be hard, but yes. It's so expensive to live here, so if you can find a house that is more affordable 110 miles away, I'd go for it. JMO.

JMO....I would definetely rather have less house in an area I want to be in than have a bigger house in unfamiliar surroundings and far from those I love. If it came down to my husband's job and us having to move out of state for it, then that is totally different.

Re: POLL: How far would you move?

well, my mom moved about 100 miles away to montauk and we still see each other often and that is a two hour ride, so thinking about it, 2-3 hours isn't too bad. considering how expenses little houses are here on LI, we might do it. but since we are in western suffolk, nothing is affordable in a two hour radius!!!

My brother did this and it was great for him, I wouldnt do it!
I am really close to my family and enjoy seeing my neice and nephew grow up. Sometimes my brother feels like he isnt a part of their lives.
Also when we have a family I really want our kids to be close enough to enjoy their grandparents, this is something I never had, but I want my kids to have that!

I moved 5,000 miles away for my husband's job. We live in Ireland now and I miss my family so much!!! Thankfully, it is only temporary we come home in June 2005. After this experience I prefer the smaller house closer to my family.

honestly, i would prefer the smaller house to be closer to my family. my brother, on the other hand, went to college in MD and never came back. now that he and his wife are expecting twins, he does feel 'removed' from the family.

on the other hand - 110 miles is probably only a 2 hour drive. certainly manageable if god forbid, something happened and your family needed you ASAP.

I would. I moved 980 miles away
I do miss my family but don't regret my decision.

I couldn't move any further from my sister than I already am. I am in Jersey and she's in Westchester - it takes around 25 minutes to get to each other. I really couldnt' do it. She's my best friend and my only family in the area.

Re: POLL: How far would you move?

Im already 45minutes away, and my family considers us 'the ones that moved all the way out there'...
For most GTGs WE do the driving to them

I dont think ID move further than this (until we retire )
I am very close to my family and its extremely important to me that my children are raised around them, on a VERY frequent basis (not just holidays)

I wouldn't blink an eye at 110 miles. 500 plus miles would make it difficult, but in my opinion 100 isn't all that far at all.

Um, we're moving across the country (but we haven't broken the news to our families yet)... so yeah, 110 miles is nothing!!!

Re: POLL: How far would you move?

I voted no. I could have bought a bigger house if I went further out east or NJ or something like that but we had limits to how far we would be from family and NYC. As it is I am 30-40 minutes from most of my family and an hour from DH's (but you would still think we live like 800 miles from them at times!). Everyone is different but when making our home buying decision both DH and I wanted to be away but not far from family and the commute to NYC was huge for us. We have a nice size house but I know how much house and prop I could have had if we moved further out East...but we compromised that for other things and are very happy with this decision.

I moved 1700 miles just for the 'chance' at more money

No job
No place to live
and I knew only one person..

Im still here

Id move again in a blink.

My family is always a phone call away. I used to see them at least once a year before I had to start saving for the wedding. Never saw them on Christmas or Thanksgiving. Usually saw them on Labor Day or Memorial Day.

Family (for us) is never far and sometimes not far enough! heh
