I moved 260 Miles away which is about a 5 hours drive. We got much more house for the money here!! I thought I would hate it, but actually I am liking it and now my Mom even wants to move here.

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
I couldnt do it.. I miss my family and im only 9 exits from them now.. i cant wait until we move into our new home and we will be only 9 blocks..
But on the other hand I could move 100000,0000000,00000,00000 miles away from my monster in laws and that still wouldnt be far enough for me.. I guess if I moved far enough away where we couldnt even be contacted by phone from them, then i would say, ahhh yes now we are far enough..

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
I am very close to my family so I don't think I could move away. But there are a lot of factors to take into account. If its an area you can see yourself living in and it is a big difference in price it might be worth it. Also how much bigger of a house?

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
I moved out to Chicago this past June. I like it out here, but I miss my family. We lived in Connecticut before that and that wasn't so bad - even in the worst traffic it only took us 2 hours to get back home. (And we went home nearly every weekend)
I'd wouldn't even think twice about moving 100 miles away. Moving this far....

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
For me -- NO WAY !!!!
I cannot be that far away from my sisters and bro. The most I could do is about 30. Right now I live 25 miles from one sister, about 20 from the other, and about 15 from my brother, and I HATE IT !!!!
We plan to move to Florida in a few years, and guess what, all my siblings are moving too - about 20 minutes away. We are just way to close.

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
Not far at all.
I could never leave my mom especially after what has happened last year. I am way too close with her, my sister and my brother to ever move far from them. We are contiplating upstate NY or Pa in the near future and they are looking into buying their own house wherever we go as well. We are each others support system in life and my husband has now become a part of that..I cant picture it any other way.
I also feel like I have family responsibilities that I need to be close to as well. My father has emphysema and I have a 92 year old grandma (god bless her). Thats just my personality though.

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
FH and I have been talking about relocating to CT after ther wedding (we live on LI where both our familes are). I voted yes, It's partly about getting more house for our $$, but we also try to think about what's going to be best for our future as far as our jobs, children's quality of life including schooling, etc...

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
I voted no. I am just too attached to my family to move too far away. I see my sisters and the kids all the time, and I couldn't imagine not being able to see them all the time.

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
We moved about 100 miles away, takes about an hour and a half to get home. I would do it again, If I miss my family I can drive home (or they can come & see me) pretty easily. Under 2 hours to me is not that big of a deal. I couldnt have gone any farther-DH wanted to move to Boston, but that was too far to me. We see friends and family a lot-its just about making the effort to make plans ahead of time. For us, neither of us wanted to raise kids in a small house w. no yard, or in a place where there were bad school systems. We have a lot more house for the money, but more importantly we have a nice area where we feel we want to raise our family. I mean, people leave their houses unlocked where we are...a little much for me, but I have retired 'the club' for my car

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
I recently had to make this very same decision and we decided against the house and are going to continue looking closer to home.... The decision itself had more to do with my commute though, than with seeing our families....
If the commute wouldn't have been awful, I would have said ABSOLUTELY!, but I would have been commuting almost 2 hours each way so I had to say no...for my sanity!
Ultimately, what I realized is that friends and family will visit as will you continue to visit them....If this move won't impact your commute...I say go for it!

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
I moved to Chicago for a job right out of undergrad. I have been here 4 1/2 years. I will say that had I not met FH here, I would have probably moved back to NY to be closer to my family.
I do get really homesick sometimes, but I just pick up the phone and call home. I go home at least 4-5 times a year even if it's just for the weekend.
It's a personal choice. If you can find a job, make friends, etc... It might not be that bad. Good luck on making a decision.

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
FH has recently dropped a major bomb on me. He is a NYC cop and is thinking of switching over to NJ police dept. (he is from NJ) I have a brother & SIL on LI and all my friends. My parents live out of state anyway. I'm torn b/c I know we can definitely get more for our money there then here on LI. I wasn't expecting all this to come about 3 months prior to getting married so I guess thats why I was a little on the surprised side. I can't make these major decisions right now and I have told him that. I'm hoping that he won't get called for any of the dept's until after the wedding when i can think a little clearer.

i moved 3000 miles away....
So did I, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
But, to use a more relevant example....when we were house hunting, we were hoping to be 'closer' to my parents and grandparents in Nassau County...however, you cannot get 'more house for your money' in Nassau - unless you are a millionaire So, we are now about 35 min. from my parents' house and its absolutely fine.
Personally, I believe in having some distance from relatives, but everyone is different.

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
In a NY minute!
Not to say I won't miss my father, we are even thinking about having him come with us.
But we want land and we hate snow and we want good schools.
We are thinking NC or SC. But it may not be for awhile.

Re: POLL: How far would you move?
Definatly. I moved 65 miles from family...and I do most of the traveling. They have been here a few times (I live in NJ), but mostly...I go to LI. For some of the family (aunt's, cousins and such), you would think I moved to Africa...it's too far for them to come here. But...if I had too...I would move another 100 miles away to improve quality of life and find a bigger house.
