POLL: if someone lies to you...

not a lie like 'I love your highlights' or 'I can't make it, I have to go to my uncle's birthdya aprty' but a more significant lie.

To me it mars the relationship entirely. it just changes things forever. I never completely trust what the person says again

Really depends on the lie and who's doing the lying.

If it's a friend and she lies about something insignificant, like how much saying she called but she really didn't - I'd get over it pretty quick.

But if she lied when I asked her if she ever fooled around with my ex when I knew the truth - well, that kind of lie would certainly mar the friendship.

A lie from DH is different. A lie from my Mom or other family member is also different.

I was raised in a home where lying was worse than stealing. If you can't get honesty from people, you have nothing.

same here, my mother wouldnt even tell someone 'we werent home' if we didnt feel like talking..... for me, obviously depending on the lie, i would know what this person was all about and never trust them again. what is that expression 'screw me once shame on u screw me twice shame on me' or something like that, i live by that. I dont lie to people and I expect the same in return.

I'm a very forgiving person (some may even say I'm a sucker ) - I just can't stay mad at people. If I had a friend who lied - as long as it wasn't a HUGE lie, well I would forgive em and move on.

If it was a huge lie, they denied it (when I knew it was true) or they lied constantly (about whatever), well I would probably just not hang out with them as much and slowly (whether consiously or unconsiously) cut them out of my lives! I hardly have time for my friends as it is - I don't need to waste my time on bad friends!

totally depends on what and who ....

i had a friend who lied about everything... she even lied to me about what college she went to!!!! i guess i am a sucker cuz i forgave her over and over, i really wanted to have a friend i guess. and the lies were not insulting to me, mostly i felt sorry for her cuz i did not understand why she was even lying, as i did not really care about the things she was lying about anyway. but eventually her lies did break up the friendship, especially when i realized she was telling other people lies about me! so i finally put my foot down after 8 years and cut her out of my life entirely.


my fiance on the other hand lies quite a bit. i have become an expert on detecting when he lies, and he often comes clean in five minutes. it is really frustrating

I've had two friends that have lied about their entire lives just about...I've cut them off completely! My guess was that they were very insecure and felt they needed to lie about their entire lives in order to have friends. I can't get passed someone playing me for a fool...they're not real friends. Real friends are the ones who are honest, etc. I close the door on those friendships.
