Just curious out there for those of you brides having a long engagement (1 1/2 yrs. or more)...what's the reasons behind it. For FH and I, it's truly about money.
wanted to add that if we had the remainder of the cash now...i would marry him tomorrow!! but i do not want to ask my family for a dime, and is family is not in the position to help. so we have no choice but to wait. BUT...i know it will be worth it.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
Money (paying for it ourselves) and also some logistical issues - like FH just spent 6 months living in Albany completing the NYS Trooper Academy.....we wanted to give us time to adjust to his new career.
Plus the money thing.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
My husband and I were engaged for 1 1/2 years but that was because I wanted that much time to plan my dream wedding. I did not want it to be rushed and not get done properly. I never wanted to plan my wedding in six months.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
We will be 1 1/2 years to the day when we get married. Our parents are helping with alot of the wedding, but we needed time to save for what we are paying for, the HM, a down payment on a house, etc.
Plus I am a slow planner, so it works out

We are waiting bc we dont want to rush the planning. Money is also a factor... plus, we are still young (both 24)

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
We had to give my parents time for their end of the money. We also were asked to wait until his older brother got married-if he wasn't on the path to it we wouldn't have waited- for the engagement at least. Then there were other personal issues. We just started planning a week before our 1 yr engagement ann! It's working out tho.
I have friends who put off their weddings for planning issues and another for money issues and they are glad they did. They feel better about their choices.
My MOH got married after knowing the guy 10 months (he's my friend also but they didn't know each other) and it all felt rushed. Money wasn't an issue for them but she's thrifty (read:cheap!)
A year to two years is a good amount of time but do what is best for the two of you!!

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
Definitely money. In addition to the wedding, we are looking for a house and there was just no way for us to save up enough of that under 1 1/2 years.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
My main reason was money. But now that I am so close, I am glad that I had a year and nine months because I didn't have to rush into getting things done. I didn't stress myself out (ask me again in 3 weeks, though) and I did things over time.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
We were engaged for two and a half years due to money, but also because JT wanted to graduate college before getting married, which I felt very strongly about, as well.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
My wedding is in two weeks, and by that time, I will have been engaged for 2 years and 3 months.
There were two reasons:
1. We aruged from the day we got engaged until the day we put the deposit down on the hall about wether or not there should be a big fancy wedding. I wanted to elope to Vegas, and FH wanted the wedding. He won, and we are having the 'big wedding'.
2. The conditions of the big wedding were that #1, we would pay cash for everything. I refused to go into debt for it. Since I would be doing the bulk of the work in putting it together (FH is working and going to school full time), I get to choose the HM. And I chose Tahiti/Moorea/Bora Bora, which added a lot of $ we had to save for.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
I said so much planning to do. It was because I wanted May or June, and I got engaged in November, so the upcoming May or June would have been too soon. So we are having a 1.5 year engagement. But we are out of state, so it is nice to have all this time to plan.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
MY FH and I were supposed to get married this past year, but we postponed our wedding due to an illness. We starting planning our wedding again in September of this year for this upcoming May, so our engagement has been going on for forever! Sometimes long engagements are a matter of preference, sometimes a matter of necessity.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
Joe and I became engaged 1/8/03. There was no ring, no date and no money. I had a nightmare and woke up crying. My FH held me and clamed me down. I told him I loved him and ask him to marry me. At first we were going to get married that year and just elope. But we are both glad we didn't. We needed time to be together and learn the ropes of life together. Money was also a factor. So was his family. Also I found, I enjoy being engaged. Yes I wanna just get married, but I enjoy being the future bride. Its fun to plan and to wait for our long speical day. Its like a kid waiting for Xmas. I'm glad we didn't rush.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
I wouldn't really say it's a long engagement, it'll be about 1.5 years but if we were to go back in time we'd prob have set a later date so that we'd have more time to save. We're paying for it ourselves with only a little help from my family, so with that and moving in together it's been rough.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
It will be 20 months from engagement to wedding. We are young and not in a rush. I wanted to finish my masters first. We also needed time to save for the wedding and get in a financial situation where we would be able to buy a house.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
A couple of reasons.... #1 time of year. We were engaged in July 04 and I always dreamed of an Autumn wedding. But a wedding in 4 mths was not what we could afford, so we chose to make it a year later. Which brings me to reason #2 money. We're paying it all by ourselves and needed more than 4 mths to save.

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
will be engaged for 3.5 years and i have no regrets! Finishing up school was the main reason for us though. I was very young when we got engaged ( i was 20, FH was 23) so we definantly were in no hurry, and to be honest with you Im enjoying my time being engaged!

Re: Poll: Long Engagement
By the time we get married in May we will have been engaged 2 years and 3 months. We would have had at least a year and a half engagement anyway to save up funds, but my brother was already set to get married August 2005 so we had to wait our turn and give everyone's wallet a chance to heal. But I'm glad we're waiting so long b/c we should be able to pay for everything in cash by the time the wedding rolls around! What a good feeling!
