Poll: What do you think of Jane Fonda getting spit on by that Vietnam veteran?

Jane was doing a book signing and a Vietnam veteran spit a mouthful of chewed tobacco on her.

He dislikes her because of her strong and vocal opposition of the Vietnam during the 1970s.

Also, she allegedly met with American POWs while she was in Vietnam and instead of helping them, she made things even more difficult for them. Alegedly, they were trying to pass notes to her with their names so she could let their families know they were alive. But, instead, she handed the notes over to the captors and criticized the American soldiers.

My papaw would gladly spit in her face because of her stance on the war. I remeber being told that you were never to metion her name or a movie with her in it around him.

I do think that it was cool that she decided not to press charges against this guy. She has spent many, many years apologizing for her actions in the past.

My dad would have done the same, not saying it is right or wrong...but if this guy was a vet, I can see where he is coming from.

I think our country was in such turmoil at that time, it is difficult for me to truly understand the full emotion of either side, since I was too young to remember it.

I just know that I would not want to be judged purely by my worst actions, or the complete lack of judgement I have displayed when I was younger. Jane has apologized for this stuff on many occasions. I think she has been demonized for so long by some people that she has become a symbol of what was horrible about that war for the American vets and it goes a little beyond the one stupid thing she did.

Spitting is a punishable and disgusting offense. I really don't condone the act in and of itself, but the motivation and feelings behind why this man did what he did? Sure.

i woudlve understood if he staged a protest to get hi spoint across but spitting is not communicating

shes apologized for what she did...she was young and personally I didnt see anything wrong

my father is a vietnam vet and many didnt even support the war so she was right

spitting is gross and she shouldve pressed charges

the guy shouldve acted with some respect for his postion

I didnt know about the most recent event/...but this last part..where did you here that? Why would the captors allow an american actor/politician to see POWS?

there were emails sent around allegedly written by the POWs. snopes.com and truth/fiction disected the text to pull out the parts that were true versus the parts that were false

I don't think the act of spitting was right, but I can understand that the man has very intense feelings. My Dad was a WWII vet and he HATED her. My FIL is also a Vet and not very fond of her either.

There are SO many vietnam stories that aren't true. Like the event of people spitting on veterans when they came home, that whole thing, that people now take as a widespread thing that happenned all over, really refers back to one specific event in time, and many people who were THERE say it never happenned at all.

I don't remember the details. But I took this amazing class about 1968 and we had a lot of guest speakers come in, etc. And there was evena girl in my class whose dad was a vet coming home wherever that was, and he was infuriated at the time by the stories because ti never happenned.

I know I'm being so vague. I don't remember the details..

SO much of the jane fonda story, similarly, is folklore. And you don't have a right to spit on someone, no matter who you are.

I don't think the guy should have spit on her BUT she needs to realize that she mad a lot of people angry and just because she is pedeling a book (trying to come off as a victim ) does not mean that she will make ammends with people

IMO it just made him look stupid. He should have been the mature one and kept his dignity. IMO that was a pretty pathetic thign to do. A real low blow.
Hopefully he feels like a real man.

My Dad is a Vietnam Vet... and the war and how the soldiers were treated still haunt him to this day... he wakes up screaming... yelling in his sleep.. we can't touch him when he's sleeping because in the jungle they were trained to attack if anyone touches you... and it's 2005 and this still changes his life.

He hates that woman, and I don't blame him. She's a pathetic a$$

Danielle...I couldnt have said it better myself! Both my father and stepfather fought in vietnam and it changed their lives and personalities forever! They too suffer from awful memories about the war. They too were treated horribly by some when they came home...including people trying to spit on THEM! Yes of course, some stories are made up but if you werent there and dont experiencel life first hand with someone who was, you dont know how it truly is.

My dad and stepdad too hate the stupid ***** Fonda! They claim she was lucky she only got spit on...may not be right to the rest of us but after you go through an experience like that...we have no right to judge because we will never know!

The war was a terirble thing. So don't blame the people who SENT you into an unjust war that could not have been one, blame the protesters who wanted to bring you home... YUP. GOOD IDEA.

I have a LOT of Vietname vets in my family, and I KNOW how much it has affected people's lives, and I don't deny that some people were really mislead and insulting and wrong to treat vets the way they did. It was sort of backwards especially considering the fact that many of the were conscripted and didn't want to be there. But I still do understand both sides. I understand the anger with the soldiers. I feel the same way about people joining the armed forces now to go fight in iraq. I just don't know why anyone would want to suit up to go murder innocent people. But when it comes down it to, it's not the soldier's fault, it's the government. But most of the jane fonda story is completely untrue. People always want to find a face to put to their anger, for the anti war protesters it was the soldiers, for the vets, it was jane fonda. Both are wrong...and you should NEVER spit on anyone, I don't care who you are. It doesn't even degrade Jane Fonda, it degrades the solider and makes him look inhuman, It makes all of the vets who AGREE with him and SUPPORT him look like complete animals.
