I was given Jonn's nana's ring which has been in their family for 7 or 8 generations now. It's better than any ring I could ever imagine.

I suggested Princess cut... and with diamonds on the sides. I did not want a solitaire. He picked the setting out himself. He actually got a bigger diamond than I wanted.

We talked about it in general once. He then went shopping with his mom, dad, sister, brother in law, borther and sister in law. They went with him but he designed the ring, they just helped him pick the stones.

We had talked about it and went looking twice at stores before he went to his jewler... he wanted me to go with him, but I said he could choose and he did more than a wonderful job!!! I was so impressed.. whenever people see it I make sure to say he picked it out all by himself!

We had never discussed what I wanted. He went all by himself to pick it out. When he found the one that he was going to buy he took one of his good girl friend's (also a BM in my BP) and asked her to look around and she picked the same exact one he wanted and then she negotiated with the jeweler for the price Now the bands are a different story I am picking that one out myself most likely

I voted yes but before you think i actually told my FH to get me that particular ring I wanted to say that he got people to ask me as to what i wanted (my sister, FMIL)
So he was very slick in that aspect which i love about him.

I had nothing to do with his ring selection and I'm glad that I didn't. The ring is so beautiful and perfect and it feels so special that he picked it out all by himself.

A year before we got engaged we went to the mall and tried on styles. We knew we both liked the simple, solitare style better. He picked out a round center with a tapered baguette on each side. It was even better than I expected or thought he would pick!

Okay, call me psycho, but I took a picture of a ring and put a deposit on it. It was a really pretty art-deco setting with a princess cut diamond. Since we were living in separate countries, it wasn't as if I could just take him to the shop and show him. So, when he came over for a visit, he went to look at the ring and decided that it wasn't good enough. According to him, the stone had lots of inclusions. I ended up with a solitaire setting with a BEAUTIFUL diamond--people are always commenting on it.
So, I love it, but it was not what I was expecting!!

We went ring shopping to get ideas and I decided I want a square diamond. Then my friend got engaged with a round stone and it sparkled like crazy! So then I told him I wanted the ring to sparkle (and princess cuts do not sparkle as much)
So he did TONS of research on his own and surprised me with a Hearts on Fire Dream ring. It looks like a princess cut but sparkles like a round!!

Other...he asked me what style I liked - I told him antique and platinum (which wasn't a question b/c that's all he would get anyway).
We looked here and there at some rings and he didn't like the quality of the stones in the antique rings that he saw. Then we went to an antique jeweller that had reproduction settings...so he went with a brand new stone in an antique reproduction.

i picked other because although it exactly what i wanted, he didn't get it for me. We got it together. We're really practical & unsentimental like that. It wodl have given him an uler if he had to shop by himself, and whiel I liek surprises, I lke what I like as well.
There was no official proposal either.
Our 'engagment date' is the day the ring was sized.

We looked at styles together at the mall, and we decided what style we both liked. Then he went to a family friend's jeweler in the city, and picked the diamond and the setting himself. It is similar to what we picked out, but even better.

All I told him was that I wanted either white gold or platinum and that I didnt want a solatire! So I gave him a little direction
But ironically about a week before he proposed (he already had the ring in his possession) I sent him an email with the picture of what would turn out to be my ring!
He said he was alittle upset that I had sent that picture but I said well at least you knew I would like it!!!!

And although I love my ring - I regret being such a freak about it I killed all the fun.

I asked for a sapphire not a diamond. I really wanted to try and buy a house before the wedding and we couldnt afford to do everything so I told him that there will be plenty of time in our future to buy me a diamond I have to say he did so much research and got me a very good sapphire 2.5 carats, if he had gotten this size and condition in a diamond we would have never been able to afford a house. The setting and stone shape he picked out all by himself, and it is truly beautiful.

thats funny you said that because i did the same thing and love my ring but when i hear about all these surprise romatic proposals i feel sort of sad.

We went looking a few times and I showed him what I liked from the jewelry store I knew he was buying from. He surprised me with it. It was very similar to what I showed him and I love it!
