Mine wasn't a total surprise...I s/ucked the fun and romance out of it like I tend to do with most things LOL. I knew that FH had spoken to my father that week to ask permission, so I knew it was coming. Plus, I knew that FH had had my diamond since November and my ring set since March (it was now the end of June). And finally, that Friday (we were engaged on a Sunday), FMIL had asked me if I was going to FH's cousin's eparty, which he didn't tell me about because he knew if I knew they got engaged I would flip my shiz, so of course, I flipped my shiz and started crying, so he basically had to tell me we were getting engaged that weekend so I would stop crying lol. I'm awful.
But the actual day, even though I knew it was coming, was still nice. We went to Avalon in Stony Brook Village to 'take pictures', which we do on any given weekend anyways. We have a bench off the main path that we would always mark with our names and date, and called it 'our bench'. It was already replaced on us once, but we marked it again. So on the way there, we ended up running in to FH's coworker who lives in the area, and she's a bit off, and she proceeds to go in to this long story about how her months old kitten just died from lapping up anti freeze that leaked from her car in the driveway

FH was TERRIFIED that I was going to lose it and he wouldn't be able to propose and it would be ruined. I was upset, but I maintained my composure, mostly because it was before my own cat passed. Had it been after, yeah, that wouldn't have happened. Would have been shot.
Luckily, we got away, and went back to our bench...much to our surprise, the bench had been replaced, AGAIN, even though it just had been in the spring. So FH told me to mark it up again, but this time make it deep so it would last, so I took out my Swiss Army Knife, and got to work...and he took out the ring from his camera case (conveniently), held it out to me, got down on one knee, and asked 'Will you marry me baby?' And I think I just grabbed it and stared at it for a bit and said over and over 'It's so pretty'...without saying yes yet HAHA. Eventually I snapped out of it and said yes, and then FH couldn't get back up cuz he hurt imself in hockey the day before lol. What a pair...he definitely resents me for that day, says I wasn't happy or excited enough, and that if I knew it was coming why was I wearing cargo pants and an american apparel t-shirt? He STILL busts my chops whenever I wear that shirt, I say but I know it's your favorite!
After all that's said and done, yeah, we didn't cry, make a fuss, do anything too romantic or mushy...but it was us!
