Positive negativity
My AFP test came back negative... WHEW! I wasn't really nervous, but I'm glad I have nothing to worry about.
Next stop, Level II sono on 6/24!

Re: Positive negativity
Truthfully, I have NO idea what it stands for ( and am waaay too lazy to look it up!
), but it's a blood test that detects Down's Syndrome, Spina Bifida, andanencephaly.Left up to me, I wouldn't have taken the test (it's optional), but Patrick is a real type A personality who needs to 'prepare' for things. He would need to know what to expect so he could read up and know how to handle what is coming.

Re: Positive negativity
Good news JennI'm nervous about this test as well.. Did you know that out of 80% of this particular test that comes back Positive, most of the time there is nothing wrong with the baby.
This test gets lots of false positives.. but a negative is a definite. So thats such wonderful news

Re: Positive negativity
AFP = alphafeto-proteinAccording to the statistics, at my age, DS occurs in 1/275 pgs, so my results were no shock to me... my Peanut's 'risk' of having Down was 1 in 380, (according to this *very* controversial test...is it necessary? is it accurate?)
My OB's amnio stats were 1 in 300+, so we had the amnio to r/o Down, etc...
BTW, JennRenee...YAY for your results!!!!

That is good. I have mine at my next visit but I figure I cannot do much about the results so I guess what will be, will be.

Re: Positive negativity
I remember being so scared of this [AFP] test when I was PG, and when we got the results back, my OB said that my numbers were 1 in over 10K chance of D/S. I was shocked, yet so happy and thankful.Congrats Jenn. Positive negativity is fabulous probability!

Re: Positive negativity
Let me just tell you, that the test has a VERY high false positive. When I took it, it came back positive and we had to go for genetic counseling ,they make you a NERVOUS wreck. I guess better safe than sorry, but since then, I have had AT LEAST 6 or 7 friends who also had a false positive.I will definately NOT be taking this test when I have another child.

Re: Positive negativity
Erica, yes it's completely optional, and had Patrick not explained why he wanted me to take it, I wouldn't have.Partly because of the HIGH rate of false positives, but mostly because I believe that what's done is done, and there's no sense in worrying about it.
