Post-marriage banking!

Original post by Ker1398

What is everyone doing banking wise after they are married? There is so much debate on whether to do joint banking and Fh and I want to iron down a plan! Who is doing a joint account and who isn't and what are your reasons?

*Crashing*

Me & Fh live together and have had our accounts meshing for 6 months.. What we do is have seperate accounts but one joint one. I stick a small portion in my personal account and the rest gets dumped into our joint. He does the same.. This way we still have a little money to splurge on things for ourselves (or each other) but our bills are getting paid and we're saving together too.. Hope this helps!

This is what I had in mind to do but my FH thinks I'm being weird by still keeping separate accounts in addition to the joint account. Why is that weird?? I have the exact reasons as you mentioned above.

Any other advice/reasoning for having both separate and joint accounts?

FH and I each have our own separate checking accounts which our paychecks get deposited to -- then we have a joint checking account, where we transfer in our share of expenses/bills (rent, car payments, insurance, cable, etc) and a joint savings account (wedding, vacations, etc).

We will eventually have joint checking and savings accounts. I will be keeping my checking and savings account. I tell my FH all the time 'what's yours is mine and what's mine is mine'. He just looks at me and shakes his head.
