Post Office

Post Office

Does anyone on here work for the post office, or do any of your FH, FW,DH, or DW's work for the post office? I am trying to find out any info as possible about working as a carrier for the post office. I took the test last year and I got a letter in the mail today saying that I was picked to come in for an interview on this wednesday.

I am not sure if I want to do it or not. The pay is better than I make now and I am sure retirement will be nice, especially since I will get a pension. I dont like the fact that you have to work all holidays, most weekends, in the rain, snow heat, and cold.

Now the other thing is that I have a bad back and I have sciatica. I am going to have to carry a bag that weighs 35lbs for 8 hours a day and always be on my feet. I know that is not going to be good for me.

Now the thing is, that I really need a job. Something that is going to pay more than I make now. I am tired of waiting at my company for something to come up, and I am tired of listening to all the empty promises from my bosses and HR.

Argh I don't know what I should do....I think from all the negativity in this post that I already know my answer, but I do not want to make a mistake.

Re: Post Office

i am not a postal carrier, nor is anyone i know. however, someone i was friends w/in the past, was - and still is as far as i know. he thought it was the greatest. you have shorter days, your not working for 8 hours, all bank holidays you have off. this is probably no help to you whatsoever, but if you know you have back problems, check w/a doctor and see what they think. you can always push one of those cart dealies, rather then carry a 90 lb bag, good luck.

My DH used to be a postal carrier. FM specific questions and I will ask him about it.

Given, your back tho is there any chance you can work the counter or in the back as opposed to doing a route?

I didn't even know any of them still carried a bag full of mail!!

Our carrier drives our neighborhood and when I lived in Queens, they had the push cart.

Sometimes you would have a mail cart and sometimes you do not.

Re: Post Office

My dad is a mailman. He carries a bag, but last year he had taken a short/partial disability b/c he was having problems with his back. I don't think it was work related, but work aggrevated it.

He told me that the postmaster (I guess) want you to park the truck at one corner, then say take enough mail for lets say 4 blocks.

So now my dad just moves the truck more often and carries less mail at a time.

He works 5 days a week, always sunday off, then a rotating day. I think he has to be there at 7 or 7:30, goes into the street about 10, then goes home for the night I think between 4-5

I can't think of anything else, have anymore questions?

Re: Post Office

So would you say that he likes his job? If he had to do it all again, would he?

Re: Post Office

Honestly, at this point in his life probably not, hes getting into physical training.

But he seems to enjoy it, he likes to exercise and be outside, of course it $ucks in the rain and more so in the snow.

He gets excellent vacation and sick days, I don't think he would ever trade for that.

Good luck on your decision.

My mom still yells at my dad for nnot taking a P.O job when he had the chance. He'd be retired by now w/ a nice pension. My mail carrier has bad knees and he seems to do really well. I don't know if you're in LI or NYC but where I live (NYC) the mail carriers all have carts, no bags, but most people have stoops so it can add up to a lot of steps. I'd go for the itnerview and let them tell you exactly. Depending on where you work and your abilities, your experience will be different from other postal workers. It can't hurt to interview! BoL!

Re: Post Office

Thanks but I have decided against going for the 6 to 8 hour interview. I have read threw the packet and I think I know that this job is not right for me. I do not want my back pain or my sciatica to get any worse than it is right now....
Thanks,
Scott

The pension isn't all that 'Nice'. It's ok but not anything to write home about. My dad retired from the PO 10 yrs ago or so and if it wasn't for the fact that the house is paid off and his property taxes are low he wouldn't be able to afford living in LI.

Re: Post Office

Yeah...thats not good. My friend just emailed me that got the job 2 years ago and he is telling me to go for it. I still do not know what to do.

He worked for the same company that I worked for and he left two years ago. He knows how unhappy I am in my current role because he did the same thing as I did when he was here except he did more.

I really need an out....I want to be able to save money and be able to pay off all my bills too. I want to make Danielle and I live more comfortable.

My thing is money....Is it worth it to go to the [post office? Do they really make a lot of money or is it going to be an average paying job? I know to start the salary in $17.17 an hour....Most of you will say thats not enough, but the sad thing is that its more than I make now. Thank god Danielle has a nice paying job.

Scott, you sound like my FH. In the past 3 years he has applied for, taken tests for, or started school for:

Suffolk cop, Nassau cop, city cop
Real estate agent
Long Island Railroad
teacher
accountant
post office

Let me think, I know there is more...

He got called for interviews for the cops (he has a bachelors in criminal justice), but ultimately decided he didn't want to be a cop. He is in accounting now, but didn't like the classes he took to sit for the CPA exam. He got called for the railroad, but decided it would be boring (good $ though). Liked the stability of teaching, but didn't like the education classes he took, and didn't want to stand in front of a class all day. Real estate agent...He decided it can be very good, or not so good depending on how good you are at it (he is not too sales-pushy). Oh, he was also going to try selling cars. Let's see...Right now he is taking the LSATs to go to law school part-time in the fall...I just kind of settled into my job--it may not be my passion in life, but it is nice, and relatively stress-free...Good luck!

Re: Post Office

OMG he sounds just like me....Except I have only taken the postal test....I have no idea what I should do with my life. I know I hate working in an office environment and I know I hate Detailing cars for a Car dealer, and I know I hated working in retail. I do like the outdoors, and I do like walking....Maybe this job will be good for me. I was reading about the benefits and they sound excellent.....It would be nice to be able to retire....If I am working for a private company, there is no way I will be able to retire.

Then why don't you go see what they have to say? It's a long interview but if leads to a career you are happy with it's nothing in the grand scheme of things.
