Post Office Rant

Post Office Rant

This was my morning:

Okay, I had to go to THREE different post offices (one in Broolyn and 2 in Manhattan) to get the right info regarding the new postage requirements and to have the invites hand cancelled.

The first PO told me that I needed $.97 stamps for my pocketfold. They only had stamps with a clock on it! Didn't even ask about hand-cancelling because the woman was just nasty and told me I will have to wait to speak with the supervisor if 'i am not happy with their selection of colorful stamps'

PO #2 was by my office on 34rd/Park. They were very helpful but when they started weighing my invites, some of them were coming up as over 2 oz. which would require .75 stamps. I figured out that the invites with the extra insert were .75. They told me that are not equipped to do hand-cancelling and they also didn't have the wedding stamps. They told me to go to 34th St.

PO#3 at 34th St.. Purchased my stamps (they had the wedidng stamps). Woman told me she will hand-cancel for .05/envelope over the first 50. So, I stamp up my envelopes and they are about to be hand cancelled when another woman starts saying that my envelopes are considered 'parcel' and that she wouldn't do it. BTW, I have pocketfolds. The original woman tells me not to worry but says that some of my envelopes are coming in slightly above 2 oz which would mean more postage. She tells me not to worry, takes my phone number down, and tells me she will hand-cancel the invites. I told her that I will be back tomorrow with the second batch.

I am so aggravated. This whole saga took about 3 hrs. worth of my morning!!! And, to boot, I don't even know if this woman was right and is going to hand cancel b/c she didn't do it in front of me.

Whatever you do, put more postage on it than you need -- on ALL of them.

8 of mine were returned for postage due while the rest were delivered -- and every single envelope was identical.

It is when they put the envelopes through the machine by hand.

not exactly. ALL envelopes will go through the machines no matter what. hand cancelling refers to the cancelling stamp that goes over the postage stamp (upper right hand corner). normally this is done by machine, but if you request hand cancelling a hand-held cancelling stamp will be used. (this is done so postage can't be re-used).

however, the envelopes still have to go thrugh a machine that stamps the bottom of the envelope with a pattern of black lines (i believe this has to do with the zip code).

Yup and every one that was returned was hand canceled. It shouldn't have happened. The PO screwed up big time.

The post office where you drop them off stamps the stamp on the envelope by hand instead of by machine. This just means it's one less machine the envelopes go through and a little less chance of it getting crinkled, ripped, etc. in the mail.

It still gets run through a machine at the receiving post office, but that usually causes less damage (b/c it's the bottom on the envelope). Unnecessary, but can be a nice touch!

Oh, no....that was what I was scared of
Oh, well, I gave her the invites already. Hopefully they won't get returned back to me.

Honestly, it shouldn't have happened and it won't happen to you. It was a total FLUKE that it happened to me.

Don't worry - I didn't mean to alarm you!
