post office update... bad news **with pics

Original post by latinaj

last tuesday i mailed myself a sample of my invitation to see if it wourl survive the trip (it has a lot of ribbon and i wanted to see if it would get totally squashed ) and also to see how much postage was...

UPDATE....

so six days later (today) i receive the invitation i mailed myself...it was in a white envelope from the post office....my package was damaged

what do i do???? it went in one envelope..the material is pretty thick...should i type 'please do not bend ' on the envelopes? (i rcvd an invite w/this once)

should i use liners?

the envelope edges are really bent...and as a result the invite (in hte black, last pic) is all messed up.these were hand cancelled.
i'm so upset............ booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

FH thinks we should hand deliver them...i'm beginning to like his idea....

Maybe bring THAT one to the post office and show the damage and ask the post office people during what stage of the process that caliber of damage happens. I wonder if you were to hand-cancel them if that's one less machine for it to be shoved through.

Inner envelopes may also add extra padding.

they were hand cancelled

the post office guy told me that after hand cancelling, they still go through one more machine

I had something similar happen with my engagement party invites, they got destroyed. They had got jammed in the post office machines and they were all torn up. I am also afraid to send my wedding invitations through the mail.

oh man!!! that stinks!!!

this may be more postage then you wanted, but one of my friends had to put her invites in a box. maybe that will help?

good idea to send one to yourself to see what would happen!

If you have xtra invites...I would try all the things you suggested doing and then do another test run.
Good luck.

Not all of them about 10, my family members were calling me up telling me that the invites came torn. Some of them were worse then others. Two of them were sent back to my house, but it was only a piece of them. So I had to call everyone up and see who didn't get there invite.

They did send them in a white envelope.

This is making me really worried about sending out my invites. I might do the same thing you did and just send one to myself to see how it comes back to me...

my invites were really thick, especially in one corner where i had a double ribbon twist. i called the post office ahead of time to make sure they weren't busy. when i got there, there were three people ready for me. they hand canceled all of them and it seems like from everyone i spoke to they arrived beautifully. i would suggest going to the post office and see if there is anything they can do to guarantee a nice delivery. i've gotten invites that came in a clear wrapping...it something clear (like celephane almost) that you just slide the invite into to protect it. not sure if that would help

My FH works for the post office and when I was sending out resumes I asked him the chances of it surviving. HE LAUGHED. He said it goes through so many hands and buckets and then is squeezed in with so much mail. If you have a small quest list and you feel you want to hand delivery, go for it!! I'm sorry if i'm being negative I just know how you feel. Good Luck FM if you have any other questions about the post office.

I agree with this! They can probably suggest ways to mail them. Or ask the person who made your invites what previous brides have done differently.
