post offices that hand cancel envelopes

i know there have been a million threads about this...but i have to ask anyway.....

when you mail your invitations, you're supposed to hand cancel them so that they dont' get crushed in the machine right?

do all post offices provide this service? or do you have to go to a specific one?
i'm in mineola......anyone o=know if they do it?

thanks!!

If you go to Hicksville-- I know that they are open 24 hrs. if you can't go during reg. hours

I hate to ask this but what is 'hand cancel' mean? I sent my invites out already.

OH NO!!!

They all do it, and it just means that they hand stamp the postmark on the envelopes instead of sending them through the machine. It is mostly to avoid damage. I live in Nesconset and they hand cancelled mine with no problem.

My post office made us do it, and I was happy to do it myself!

yay! thanks everyone!
i was hoping I could do it myself......I guess I'm a control freak.....but I took so much time putting the stamp on straight and addressing them and making sure the outside looked perfect - that I wanted to make sure I could finish the process off myself too!

How exciting....they should be going out soon!!!

I took my e-party invites to the Mineola post office and all I had to do was bring them up to counter and tell her that I wanted them hand cancelled.

It's not just so they don't get damaged in the machine - it's so that they don't get those ugly stamps and black bar codes on them. When I saw one that had been mailed -- it looked absolutely pristine -- no marks whatsoever. You couldn't even tell it had been mailed yet.

Okay, ladies when the time comes to mail my invites, I take it to the post office clerk and tell her I want it

'HAND CANCELLED'

That sounds so weired.....but, if it will arrive preety it is worth the price.!!!!!!

Mail has been 'cancelled' when there's an ink stamp going through the mailing stamp. The hand cancel stamp usually reads the date and post office location/zip code you're at.

My advice is to ask if YOU YOURSELF can hand cancel your invites. They allowed me to do mine right then and there.

When they say 'Hand Cancel', they mean physically stamp each invite with a rubber ink stamp & ink pad, as opposed to a machine printing on it.

we did it ourselves - it took about 15 minutes to go through all of them, but it was worth it in the end because they were delivered quickly and look ed beautiful upon their arrival!

Glad I wasn't the only one who was really lost too, that is, until I read this entire thread! I never knew what hand cancelling was either -- I must be on another planet sometimes!

Thanks ladies ..

I Love this board, I would've never known something like that until I read this on here
