Because of some credit-related mistakes my husband made when he got out of college, we thought it might affect our ability to get a mortgage on a house.
We went to this website to get his credit reports:
http://www.consumer.state.ny.us/
By the way, don't fall into those scams like 'freecreditreportdotcom'. This is the official NYS Consumer Protection Board site and as a NY resident, you are entitled to one free set of (3) credit reports per year. To get your actual 3-digit FICO score is a few bucks but if you only want to see the details of the reports, it will cost you nothing. Just have a printer handy.
So anyway, we ran the reports and his score was a heck of a lot better than we thought it was going to be. Hooray!![]()
Turns out, I did something a couple years back that helped his credit score. I added him to one of my best credit cards. And it shows up as positive credit on his record, with the same available credit as I have on the card.
So it's like he's getting to reap the rewards for my efforts! Hey, whatever will help us get a cheaper mortgage. I added him to another card just last week. It doesn't serve to increase the amount of combined credit but hopefully, it will enable him to apply for a better credit card under his own name in the future.
