OK, so I'm all about taking Pre Cana, and I know that a lot of people have great experiences with it... but I just have to vent about something!!
We couldn't do the one offered by our Church because of FH's work schedule, so we had to sign up for a 2 day weekend one (not the overnight one, the sat sun 9-5 one). This comes along with a 250 dollar 'donation'....
I am in the process of looking for a job, so we're being very careful with our money right now. I called to ask if we can be formally registered and pay in a month or so when times are better b/c the weekend isn't till June....
They said no way!! Either we pay in full now or we have no spot!! Is this what the Church has come to?!! I've been giving money in that basket every week for years!! Grrrrrrr!!! It makes me not even want to get married there!

Re: Pre Cana Vent
WOW! I am not sure who you spoke to at the church, but I would try and speak to one of the priests about your situation or even to speak to your own church and see if they could speak to someone on your behalf. It is amazing that church's now adays complain about not having that many members getting married in the church, but when you a have couple who wants to you turn them away because of their financial situation. That is just wrong. I am sorry this is happening to you. Good Luck!

Re: Pre Cana Vent
Thanks... I spoke to this lady names Cindy Holmes at the Diocese... then I called back and spoke with the secretary and asked if there was anyone else that could handle the situation... she said no, only her
I mean, FH makes money, it's just that he's paying for my rent and his rent and my bills and hills bills this month, so this really isn't the time for us to be shelling out 250 bucks!

Re: Pre Cana Vent
I am sorry to hear that. My FH had the same situation so we had to pay 250 as well. It is tough and we could of put it towards something else, but it has to get done so I bit my tongue and did. I feel if it is a donation, they shouldn't tell you what you have to pay. Same thing with getting married in a church. They call it a donation but it is actually a fee.

Re: Pre Cana Vent
I just completed this pre cana not only is it $250 but its dreadfully boring! There were 30 couples there thats a nice $7500 'donation' for the church. It was so hot in the room yesterday I almost passed out!

Re: Pre Cana Vent
You might want to look into Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa. I know a couple of people on here did pre-cana through them. Its one day 9-6 and its FREE!!! We are going April 28th. Give them a call!!

Re: Pre Cana Vent
I just feel like I want to say 'OK, well I have no money right now, so can I have back the thousands of dollars I've given you over the past 10 years?' Then I'll make out a check for the 250!

Re: Pre Cana Vent
WHOAH! our weekend pre-cana was under $100!!!! Yeah, the church can be really money grubbing to the point of being insensitive sometimes....
I'd definitely go above that woman's head to the clergy. The church is supposed to be about charity and helping others, not sticking it to people, in their time of need!!!!

Re: Pre Cana Vent
Wow.. Can you call other parishes to see what they offer? We did the weekly sessions and it only cost us $75.

Re: Pre Cana Vent
WOW speak to someone else. Our church told us that with the expense of the 'weddign' in its entirety that if money became a problem to just let them know and they would work with us.
I hope it works out for you!!!!

Re: Pre Cana Vent
We just got done with Pre-Cana this past Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes in Massapequa. It was a 9-6 day, mass confession etc. and it was free. You may want to give them a call. They have them every month until June. I can give you there number if you want to FM me!

It's a donation. They can't charge for counseling unless they are registered counselors.

Re: Pre Cana Vent
Through this whole wedding process I have felt the the only time I kept having issues was where the church was involved...from precana to the appropraite baptismal certificates. I even went so far as to tell the receptionist (i really do hope she was not a nun) that the Catholic church has made getting married a very difficult process, in which they were very unhelpful.

What is the matter with people? Doesn't the church have any FAITH in us anymore?

HAHAHAHA but it's true! They complain that no one is getting married in the Church anymore, but look at what they put us through!
