Pre-Natal Vitamins?

Hi - I know it's suggested to take pre-natal vitamins before actually getting pregnant, but how early is early?

If we wanted to try and conceive within the next year, anyone know when I should start taking them?

Thanks

Re: Pre-Natal Vitamins?

As soon as possible. You might even start to take a folic acid supplement..it's never too early to start taking better care of oneself when TTC.

Just remember that prenatals are only vitamins, not magic pills that will make it easier to concieve. This is not directed at you specifically Teri, but sometimes I feel like women are asking this question as if prenatals are a fertility pill. It's silly actually. You should still speak with your OB and discuss your general health, cut out caffeine, etc.

Just as a general FYI - even after you have a child, it is recommended that you continue to take prenatal vitamins during your child-bearing years, especially if you plan to have other children. This ensures that your body maintains higher levels of things like folic acid, which are important in very ealry stages of pregnancy when the baby's nervous system is developing.

Hope this helps, and good luck TTC!

Re: Pre-Natal Vitamins?

I was always taking multi-vitamins and some folic acid supplement. When I got pregnant I asked my doctor if there is a big difference between prenatal vitamins and regular multi-vitamins and she said there really isn't. During my pregnancy I will continue to take the multi-vitamins I'm taking now as well as the additional folic acid. Ask your doctor what they recommend. Even if you're not planning to get pregnant anytime soon, I think it's a good idea to be taking vitamins for your own health.

Re: Pre-Natal Vitamins?

Yes, I should have clarified - I have always taken multi-vitamins daily since I was very young! remember those Flintstone ones? YUM!

Anyway, I need to get to the dr anyway, so I'll definitely speak with him about this.

And no Claud, I know the vitamins aren't a quick-fix or fertility pill! LOL
Some people are used to instant gratification, so I guess I could see how some would have the mis-conception
