Okay, so Im debating about this whole pre-nup thing. My FH hasnt brought it up but I also want to protect myself. I mean most people say are you crazy? Dont bring it up if he doesnt. But I heard that without one you are taking a chance. On the one hand you can luck up and get half of everything on the other hand, you can get a judge who gives you nothing, especailly if you didnt work for it or hes the one who made all the money. Anyone getting one? If so whats the procedure?
And in no way am I thinking of getting a divorce!!! Thats the last thing I would ever want! Of course I pray for a long, happy marriage. But this is 2007!

Re: Pre Nup
I would suggest contacting an attorney.... any family law atttorney can at least answer your questions.
My FH is an attorney, and he said that is what you should do, they can definitely help you.

Sorry! I'm not getting one either. Maybe you should discuss it with FH first?

I'm not getting one either. We both don't believe in divorce and we are both broke. But I agree you should talk to a lawyer.

Re: Pre Nup
Just something funny to add...did you ever see the Chris Rock HBO special where he talks about a pre-nup? He says'...its not so bad if you have $500,000 in the bank and she takes half...but if you have $30,000 and she take $15,000...LOL ....Sooooo funny!
Anyway...I realize it is 2007, but marriage is forever...till death do us part! Unless you have known eachother for less than a year or 2 and one person has family millions or estates or something...I can't see how it would be relevent. I understand people split up...its life it happens...But if it does we split what we have down the middle.

Re: Pre Nup
We're not doing one either. FH makes waaaay more then me so Im not really the one who would have to worry anyway but just like all the other girls were saying, we feel marriage is a forever thing and dont want to even think that something like this would ever have to be dealt with.

Im really happy for you if you feel you are never going to get a divorce but some people need to step into reality. Yes marraige is supposed to be forever and everyone wants their marraige to last forever but in 2007 50% of people get divorced. That means half the people on this forum and this site will end up divorced. Its nice to live in fairy tale land but this is life.

I think it is very smart of you to want to protect yourself...I also don't want to think of divorce but what you are saying is absolutely true, as sad as it is the divorce rate is very high and i think it might be higher than 50% now, not 100% sure but I might be right. I am sure that 50% wouldn't have gotten married, spend money on a wedding and made a commitment to eachother if for one moment they thought it would end in divorce. Anything can happen and life is full of surprises.
I would speak to a lawyer and he can answer any of your questions and do this all for you.
I am not getting one because honestly i don't know what i would be protecting at this time hahaha, can you put a clause in for later when you do get more things jk, if he wants to take my debt that hey go ahead lol, well i just paid off most of my debt so im good...But yeah i wouldn't know...alot of people also get it for different reasons, if they were previously married then it helps their spouse stay protected in case the ex wants to go after certain assets, and i know theres a couple of other reasons to other than just splitting your money in case of a divorce.

Re: Pre Nup
I heard something really interesting at pre-cana this weekend...a pre nup invalidates your wedding. Of course this is if you are getting married in church, but I thought it was very interesting to hear it put that way. Just some food for thought. I don;t know

Re: Pre Nup
FH and I aren't getting one, but I did look into it. We are students and don't exactly have much right now. All the pre-nup is good for is if you have assets before the marriage that you want to protect. Say you have a condo, once your married that would be considered both if god forbid you get a divorce. That also counts with debt as well. Hope that helped!

Re: Pre Nup
We're not getting one because we have nothin, but I wouldn't want to get one anyway. I know that divorce is high, but a lot of people today don't take marriage as seriously as they used to which is contributing to the trend. Even if I did have something to protect, if FH was to leave me, I don't think I'd care who got what, I'd be too devastated.

okay FH and I plan on gettin one, (im pretty sure..we joke bout it but its not definite) but god forbid something happened...you have to protect yourself.
I love FH and can not see anythign breaking us apart...BUT i also can not predict what life with throw at us.

Re: Pre Nup
I totally agree with you, lets not live in a fairytale. So is the prenup to protect your assests or his or both.
