Pre Nup

Re: Pre Nup

Well I think there's nothing wrong witha pre-nup to protect your assets. With that said neither I nor FH have assets to protect so it doesn't make sense. As for well if he makes all the money that's bull because there's two in a relationship and even if you contribute more on the home front than in actual finances you are still contributing the the relationship and the family.

We're not doing one... We're both getting married starting out and are bringing about the same into the marriage, asset wise. So we see no need in one. Whatever we earn throughout our marriage is ours.

we don't have much, so there's no need!

The only thing FH would get from me if we signed one is debt!

So yeaaaa we're obviously not doing one...

I heard something really interesting at pre-cana this weekend...a pre nup invalidates your wedding. Of course this is if you are getting married in church, but I thought it was very interesting to hear it put that way. Just some food for thought. I don;t know

That's interesting. That never even came up in my pre-cana.

I can understand wanting to protect yourself, but we are both coming in with the same stuff (and it's not much) so there's no need. You should talk to a lawyer--if you or FH do have a good amount of assets, then maybe it's worth considering.

I think it's a fine idea. It's not dooming your marriage. It's just for protection. We're most likely not getting one.

You bring up good points - it's really a personal decision that you should both be comfortable with.

I think this is a good idea..and I think its better to be safe then sorry but you know what im too lazy to do it...i have to much going on right now to make the effort!

Re: Pre Nup

it is a good idea if you need to protect certain assets. I myself am not getting one but i have seen many people at my job get screwed financially by a divorce. It really depends on the situation i guess...

Re: Pre Nup

i think we should get one bc FH owns his own business and he should protect that - esp. since he has a partner and i would want his partner to do the same

however, FH think it isn't necessary so we aren't getting one

i hope we are making the right decision bc i know someone going through hard times right now and a prenup would have DEFINITELY helped! it is funny how things change in such a short amount of time

Opie and Anthony do a skit that is pretty funny but so true. When people call in with their horrible divorce stories they always ask what their wedding song was and they describe how this guy danced with his bride to such and such song and now she is with his best friend and trying to get all of his money etc. extreme example though but still . . .

FH and i dont have many penny's to our name right now, so there would really be no point. but if we did have more coming into the marriage i would definitely consider it. lets face reality, probably every couple that ends up getting divorced goes into marriage as love-struck as we are now. we are too under the influence of hope to even think about such a horrible ending. i know for a fact that my aunt of uncle hate eachother but my aunt would never sign the divorce papers because her husband has a huge inheritance....yea, evil. hopefully its never is necessary, but if god forbid divorce occurs, this could be the only thing you feel good about. .

FH and I aren't doing one but we did make a verbal agreement that in the event (not that we're planning to) that we get a divorce there are certain items (like his computer, his Dell flat screen HDTV) that he can have because he bought it as well as vice versa with things that I bought before we got engaged.

I know some folks just want to protect themselves and if you have a great deal of assets it might be a good idea.

FH and I aren't getting one, but I did look into it. We are students and don't exactly have much right now. All the pre-nup is good for is if you have assets before the marriage that you want to protect. Say you have a condo, once your married that would be considered both if god forbid you get a divorce. That also counts with debt as well. Hope that helped!

You can protect future assets as well with a prenup, not just the assets you currently have. Also, if you own something before you get married for the most part it is separate property. Also, anything you inherit is separate property.

FH & I have discussed it but not researched it at great length. We both own sizeable assests individually and stand to inherit assests from our families in the future.
