Re: Pre-Prenatal vitamins...
Yabbo, now is a good time, I started on them 3 months before we started to TTC. You can take an OTC one. My GYN gave me a prescription one though, they are HUGE!!!
I'm afraid of that jenn....I don't have trouble swallowing pills...but of course the smaller the better.. since I have to wait 2 months for health insurance to kick in...I'll start with OTC

Yabbo, I cut them in 3 cause its really hard (for me) to swallow these!
OTC ones are fine for now, my GYN told me before she prescribed me what I have, 6 mos ago, that OTC was fine.
As for anything else, don't smoke.

Re: Pre-Prenatal vitamins...
You could start now if you want. The vitamins are great for your hair and nails!
As for size, mine aren't very big. It's about the size of a Tylenol caplet, only a tiny bit fatter. They're called Duet. I don't take additional folic acid.
And I agree about the smoking. Try to quit now, if you do, so it won't be so hard when you CAN'T smoke.
GOOD LUCK!

I take the GNC pre-natals, no RX needed. Folic Acid is the most part of the vitamin to take before you TTC.

Re: Pre-Prenatal vitamins...
I am taking an OTC prenatal as well. It's the Genovese/Eckerd brand, similar to Stuart Prenatals. They have 800 mg of folic acid. Much more expensive than a Woman's One-A-Day, which has 400 mg FA and my doc said was plenty good enough.
Still on the ones the Dr prescribed, these were $54, I wish Ihad not thrown the box away, then I could take the box to The pharmamcy and compae to the OTC ones They are very big, but they make my nails grow
I love the nail incentive...my nails are prety good to begin with...so this is an extra added bonus!!!

Chewables? Wow, thats great since a lot of vitamins are usually like horse pills.

Re: Pre-Prenatal vitamins...
I jsut took a Woman's One A Day vitamin. For about 1 yr prior to finding out I was pregnant. All women's vitamins have to have a certain amount of folic acid now - FDA passed some big rule on it. So I don't think you need a supplement on top of it.
And don't smoke. (If you can help it! - I did up until the p-test day..but we weren't TTC) - its a good thing to get rid of!

Re: Pre-Prenatal vitamins...
I also take Duet By Stuart Natal. I LOVED their size, so I chose them last time I was preggo (they had given me a bag of 15 different ones) and now I asked for them again. They werent called 'Duet' then. That just came out. Jennbaby why dont you ask for something smaller? I HATED the huge ones. make me gag. Chewables, get all stuck in my teeth

Re: Pre-Prenatal vitamins...
Pre-natal vitamins are pretty much all the same. OTC is fine. Just make such there is 0.4mg folic acid, that's the most important thing. Folic acid helps prevent neurologic defects and should be taken when you are TTC. You're right on track. I would also recommend a pre-conception visit with your OB/GYN so you could review your vaccinations and medical history to see if there is anything else.
