Prenatal vitamins

The prenatal vitamins I have only have 1mg of folic acid. I thought you were supposed to take 400 mg pre pregnancy a day and 800 after you become pregnant. Why is the vitamin that is a prescription from my doc short of the amount of folic acid or am I reading it wrong? Anyone know anything about this?

Re: Prenatal vitamins

You can ask the pharmacist or your doctor. it must have more than that.

Re: Prenatal vitamins

I wouldn't worry too much about it. My doc actually recommended that I take the folic acid supplements separately. The prenatals have a lot of other vitamins that you need.

Re: Prenatal vitamins

Ok, just my stupidity. Yes, my vitamin has 1mg but the recommended dose is 400 micrograms before pregnancy and 800 after. So, it has more than 800 micrograms, I am assuming it is 1000 mcgs if my math is correct. Just me not reading carefully. But thanks anyway

Re: Prenatal vitamins

I dont believe there is a wrong time to start taking them.
I know woman who started taking them a year before.. If you know you want to try to concieve soon.. just start, it doesn't hurt you at all.

Re: Prenatal vitamins

It won't hurt to start them early. I am getting married in December and have been on them about one month so I am probably not on them long enough.

Re: Folic Acid vs. Folate

The vitamins I have been taking for general health and with the hopes to TTC in the near future are GNC's Womens Ultra Mega - I take two tablets per day for a total of 400 mcg of Folic Acid a day. (plus all the other good stuff in it, way too much to list)

Do you think this is what I should be doing? I mean, its not called 'Prenatal' vitamins, but it seems to cover all the bases anyway. Right?

Re: Folic Acid vs. Folate

My doctor told me that if I want to TTC in the summer they would put me on prenatal vitamins in early Spring.

Re: Folic Acid vs. Folate

When I went for a pre-conception appt in the summer she told me to just take a multi-vitamin and to save money on prenatals. So that's what I've been doing. It's got the 400 mcg. I guess it just depends on your doctor. Even then, b/c my friend goes to the same doctor and she put her on prenatals -- go figure.

Re: Folic Acid vs. Folate

The terms 'folate' and 'folic acid' represent two different forms of the same vitamin.

Folic acid is the synthetic (man-made) form that is used in vitamin supplements and fortified foods.

Folate is the form of the B vitamin found naturally in foods. Both forms of folate are good for people of all ages.

It is suggested that all women, even if they are not TTC, consume .4mg of folic acid/day.

hope this answers your question.
