How soon before you conceive do you start to take prenatal vitamins?

They are just vitamins, so start taking them whenever you feel like it. They don't help you conceive, they just ensure that your body has the right vitamins for the baby's development once you are actually pregnant. If you already take a multivitamin as part of your daily routine, you can skip the prenatals for now and just take a folic acid supplement.

My dr recommended that I be on them for at least 3 months --- Laura

I think if your diet is pretty balanced, start them as soon as you start TTC. If you're not using birth control now, then start taking them now, since you never know....
Out of all the vitamins and minerals folic acid is the most important for the baby in the first couple of weeks of conception, so I think if you have a good diet, you can even just take 400mg of FA before you start TTC and 800mg when you start.
If you're not eating right, whether or not you are TTC, you should take a multivitamin.

Re: Prenatal vitamins...
ok, one question about the prenatal vitamins. I have been taking them for a few months since we are soon ttc. I switched to taking them before I go to bed because they were making me very nauseous. But now, I am waking up very nauseous and have an awful taste in my mouth all day. Could it be the vitamins??? Before I think it is some other awful disease and let my mind run wild. I am pretty sure the nauseau is not from pregnancy so I am ruling it out. Anyone else have this happen? thanks

Orange juice before bed is not for everyone - it would give me heartburn for one!
Are you taking prescription prenatals, or over the counter ones? If you're taking the prescription ones, it's possible they are too strong for you. Speak with your doctor about it. Or, try breaking them in half, and taking one half in the AM with a full breakfast, and the other half in the evening with your dinner. But, just don't take them on an empty stomach, b/c that will make it worse.
Good luck!

You can also try taking a different brand. I was taking OTC ones, but then my MW prescribed Primacare. Well, the first day I took them, I woke up with the worst stomach pain ever, I thought I had to go to the hospital and have my stomach pumped, but I ended up vomitting in the middle of the night and the entire next day.
